Supposing one had some free time, let's say between a few months and a year, and wanted to learn/study something - what would one choose?

When does your sentence start op? If you have some time before it begins you should learn some self defence - might be useful in the showers.

Once you are in there I believe there are some good training programs in lock picking, car stealing, drug mixing, and tiger kidnapping.

One thing I'd devote time to learning (If I wasn't lazy) is a foreign language.

Assuming I'd have a lot of free time I'd take up a martial art, probably Krav Maga, learn a useful language, (Russian or Chinese) and do some other course that would benefit me in a job (Safepass, First Aid, ECDL).

I would love to know more about theoretical physics. It is fascinating to me, the unity of science and philosophy.
