Help needed....The centre console compartment lid on my 2006 Toyota avensis will not close. Is there a cure or do i have to replace the whole centre console. By all accounts this is a common fault with the avensis.

Buy small self adhesive magnets and place one on the lid and one in the cubby. Should keep it shut. Atlantic or B&Q should have them.

Thanks, a cleaver quick fix, but problem then is it won't open. It has a gentle press down action that opens the lid.... I'll come clean, this is a job i am doing for someone else so i need the lid to open a close as designed.

Ah right...scrap yard so. Would be easier. Is it the one on top of the dash or in the middle of it?

If it stuck closed it's prob not faulty maybe has coins stuck down the back of it, remove it and have a look, the usual fault with these is they stay stuck open

had exactly same problem with a mazda 626 very recently - fixed problem by taking out that portion of the centre console with the compartment lid on it too from a maxda mx 6 from scappie up north (traynors, while getting other things too) and it worked perfectly - centre console fine and compartment lid opening and closing as it was originally intended - didnt have to take out entire centre console as it was split in two sections - front section with the gearchanger and rear section with handbrake surround and compartment/lid

It the one under the handbrake leaver. Its looking like a scrap yard job alright, tried a few yesterday with no joy. It appears they don’t hang about long in the the scrap yards because they are a common problem.

If your car doesn't have dual zone climate control then the armrest is an addon. Likely culprit is the screws holding the hinge on are loose.

Saga over. I picked up a centre console from scrapers yesterday for a €100, (€200 new from Toyota dealer) turned out when I striped it down the spring loaded lid mechanism was f*cked. Good old Japanese flimsy plastic design cubby, otherwise a good car to drive. Cheers anyway for all help given.
