The Abercrombie Situation

Well, I thought it was funny: Abercrombie & Fitch are so annoyed at the Jersey Shore characters wearing their clothes that they're offering to pay them not to wear A&F clothes. They don't care who knows, either - they put out a press release about their offer to "The Situation":
"We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image. We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans. We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael 'The Situation' Sorrentino and the producers of MTV's The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response."
I've been at UCD in Dublin 4 for four years now, and I think there are quite a few local students who could use some of A&F's money too ... now to find someone in PR for Ugg Boots. :o

"... aspirational nature of our brand"? Well, to what are their customers aspiring? To wear more expensive clothes that look the same as clothes 1/4 the price from Penney's? "Oh, look, this label is proof that I spend more money on clothes than necessary! Amn't I better than the plebs?"

Same is happening to Louis Vuitton and Gucci now! But in fairness many r just wearing fakes!

So frustrating I paid 500 euro for a bag and two days later I pass a scumbag with that same bag grrr...

What A&F are trying to do is useless, if its not on TV its on the streets of everytown around the world you will see scumbags and the like with well known brands. They just over advertised themselves, the more well known the brand is the harder it is to controll who wears it and who replicates it...

meh, just a publicity stunt. If you want to see a brand/image getting destroyed then look at Burberry

I'd say it must be frustrating to pay that much for a bag full stop!
How is it so much better than the fake one that looks the exact same? (except for the fact that the LV symbol on Louis Vuitton bags crosses the stitching on the fake ones. Yes I know that :))

I'm with the "scumbag" on this one.

When you pay that much its not just the bag you are buying, its the experience and the 'status' you are getting. Some people buy a new bag every month for 30 quid, I choose to buy one or two a year. A fake wouldn't last that long as quality tends to be sh@t.

Welcome to capitalism, once someone has the cash they can buy what they like.

You'll need to try a bit harder to appear fashionable i guess.

    Tough challenge.

Do Louis Vuitton make anything that doesn't look like a bored toddler scribbled all over it in gold paint?

The funniest thing is people will pay 500 bucks for a bag that the scumbags they hate will get for free...off them. lol

This is the part I don't get. How is the experience different?

As a man, I don't judge a woman based on her brand of handbag or what it looks like. To be honest, I wouldn't really notice her handbag unless it had a swastika on it or something.
Though if my girlfriend spent €500 on a handbag I'd probably tell her how silly I thought that was.

At the end of the day, it's your choice and your money and I don't criticise you for buying what you want, but I have to admit I do find it hard to understand the idea of spending so much money on something that to me is so trivial.

Status schmatus. Only about 20% of people will actually recognise the label and the majority of those will assume that it's a fake. Sucker.
