I didn't actually continue with psychology as I wanted to do music more, but was offered a place.
It's not a huge amount on top of your other subjects really, as you will have to pass all other subjects too. Just make sure to attend all lectures, and tutorials. If you are having trouble from the start with any of the modules, make sure to address the problem straight away and talk to your lecturer or go to the maths support centre if you need a hand with the stats.
Work hard, do the readings and assignments to the best of your ability and you should do fine.
Also, be sure to talk to some of the 2nd/3rd year psych students, according to most of them the course completely changes after 1st year and a lot of people don't seem to enjoy it as much as 1st year.

Thank you very much,I know this may be a bit personal but what did you get in your leaving ...I'm so afraid I won't be able for it even though it's what I really want to do. I'm ready to work my ass off and am fully aware its a long road but I'm dreading stats like I know I'll need help there. I did music and English last year but couldn't stand English but I will be doing Music again :)

1st psych has got some leaving cert. ordinary level maths, and some bio, but if you havn't done bio before you should be fine. I got mid 400's, nothing spectacular.
You should be well able for the course, don't worry! Loads of people to help, and your tutors should be really approachable, I know mine was and offered to tutor in stats and essay writing.

Another interesting question about Psychology in Arts.

If you make it to 2nd year do you necessarily have to switch to pure Psychology or can you do Psychology and keep one of your Arts subjects on with it (Eg Sociology)?

No, sadly you have to study pure psychology if you get accepted into 2nd year. Hence why I decided against.
You could probably sign up for an extra module in a subject you liked, but not a whole subject. I suppose it depends on the department. Also the work load of 2nd year psych wouldn't really allow you to take another subject with it. So many essays/write ups!

Ok thanks I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I'll see how I get on with 1st year and maybe talk with some 2nd year students about my choice whether or not I will look into taking an extra module.

But if I can't I will be prepared for the workload only permitting me to do Psychology, as I really want to be a Psychologist and understand there are professional requirements that would make it necessary to do a direct route for 2nd and 3rd years.

As already stated by Tootyflutty it really isnt that hard. I have just been accepted to 2nd year and I didnt over exert ,myself during the year tbh! Dont get me wrong I did work hard but on the other hand I didnt kill myself with the workload!!! If you're worried about the stats there is a maths centre at nuim that offers a free walk in service to assist you with areas of maths you may be struggling with. Stats isnt all that bad so long as you attend all the lectures otherwise its easy to get lost in them. Best of Luck anyhow if its what you really want you'll be more than able for it :)

Just another question from the uninformed here trying to plan a future...

When you apply for MH101 or MH106 (and as a mature student if that makes a difference), when do you need to select your subjects? Is it possible to do this in August/September or do you need to have that all determined before application/interview?

    Thanks anyone in advance!

You don't choose your subjects until registration (the week before lectures begin), and you can even change them after that for a few weeks. Obviously I imagine having an idea of the subjects you would like to do would be useful for an interview, but there would be no need to have any concrete choices, just a rough idea of what you would like :)
