Was talking to a mate eariler. And the topic of listening to music on the go came up. Alot of people do so walking down the road. But with doing so you take away one of the senses. So you dont really know whats going on around you ... So isnt that bad?

I dunno, a few examples off the top of my head.

    While listening to music you:
    - couldnt hear anything that you may accidently drop (wallet? phone? etc)
    - you cant hear whats going on around you. Which can be dangerous.

So boards, I guess what do you think of listening to music on the go? stupid or safe? (and no this isnt a judgemental thread .. its one of those whats your views on it thread)

Isn't that one of the reasons why zips were invented?

    It depends on the muzach.

If it's James Blunt then they are weirdos.

If I have my earphones in either I can't hear people shouting abuse at me, or they see I've got earphones in and don't bother.

If I'm walking somewhere nice and scenic, like the beach, fields or a forest I'll forgo the Mp3 player, but walking anywhere else it makes the journey go quicker/more enjoyable.

I've been telling people this for ages.

Also talking to people when walking is just plain suicide - it's harder to hear and you need to use valuable brain matter to formulate sentences when there may be grand canyons right in front of you which you may fall into.

Also don't think whilst walking as this dulls all your senses and that's a really big no no.

I do all the time, in fact I just did it earlier. That's where zipped pockets come in. :) Sure it disconnects you from your surroundings a little but sometimes that's what I want.

When I walk through town I always have the earphones in. I'll even put them in when the battery in my phone/iPod is dead, just so I don't get hassled for "a spare cigarette" "two euro for a hostel" or "HI HOW ARE YOU THIS MORNING/AFTERNOON/EVENING, CAN I HAVE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME TO DISCUSS [INSERT CHARITY HERE]" chuggers.

Walking while listening to something I have no problem with.
Cycling while listening to something is a bit of a problem, I just wouldn't feel safe unless I could hear cars coming up on me.

Always! I subconciously walk to the beat so, if I pick my songs right, I get there faster. The flip-side to this - listening to The Offspring while walking makes me develop something of swagger... :o:p

I do this too. Sometimes I even pretend I'm in a movie and the music I'm listening to is the backing track.

In fairness, i've seen quite a few people drop their wallets and phones over the years. And these people werent listening to anything. In many cases you'd see a passer-by bring it to their attention.

The only time it's unacceptable to listen to music walking down the street is when your trying to talk to your mate who has his ipod in.

    ****in height of ignorance!

It's just a bit, well, odd. After all, the Walkman was invented so that people could you know - walk and listen to music at the same time. It's clearly not stupid.
