They would at least have more control over their own currency. But yes an impoverished europe is not good for anyone never mind germany.

Take us, if the Punt was reintroduce we would be lucky if it was worth one third of what the euro is.

So imported things like fuel would be 3 times dearer, and our wages would not increase.

Iceland for example when their currency collapsed.

I don't buy the one third argument. We have lots of exporters here making high value products and services. We'd still be in the single market. Something more like 2/3 of it's original value.

This would make our exports super cheap overnight ... creating lots of jobs here. Also since we would default on our debts, that millstone would be gone. Social Welfare would be slashed by 1/3 overnight. Also the Croke Park agreement could be adhered to without pay cuts. Our budget would be balanced overnight, since all the bills are 2/3 of what they were, so we could return to the bond markets if required.

Companies making good stuff that people want abroad would be paid in euro or dollars, and paying wages in punts could price things very competitively as real wages would be lower.

Remember prices in the shops would have to come down by 1/3 too as otherwise they will sell nothing. An article today said that prices here are still 18% above the EU average so there is scope there to trim prices.

Our government would then have a golden opportunity to keep a lid on costs as they would be back in control.

    Bring it on I say.

We are still out of the money markets, we are hugely indebted and we have virtually no gold reserves. It may even be worse then a third.

But with economics you can never be sure. I truly hope I am wrong.

If we had the Punt it would be pegged pretty much to sterling. Most of our exports go to the UK and USA anyway. We won't miss the euro at all.

C'mon 4leto, this guys inane suggestion deserves an appropriate response.
Jeez what does he expect ?

Having said that, I understand why the Germans are frustrated though. They don't do slackers in Germany, everybody does their bit, and in doing so you can avail of the excellent transport system, excellent beer, excellent healthcare, excellent social services for the elderly and disabled, safe to walk the streets etc etc. They don't put up with nonsense from anyone. You wont milk the system in Germany and get away with it.

I can understand when they look at us, and Greece, and get pissed off with all of the 'cute hoor jiggery pokery' going on. If we're serious about getting out of this shit, we're going to have to be as firm, but fair, on our own people, as they are with theirs. If you were living in Germany, and told your German friends you didn't want to work, you would be boxed off socially, nobody would want to be associated with you.

My sister-in-law works in welfare in Dublin, and you wouldn't believe the scamming going on. They know it happens, and in many cases they know who's doing it, but they haven't the rescources to deal with it.

If you don't play ball in Germany you don't get a cent, full stop. 'Resistance is Futile' to coin a phrase.

Still think this guys suggestion about the flag is totally moronic though.

They will try to peg it to to sterling as they did in the olden days, but because of our stifled position with the massive fiscal deficit and our NAMA and banking crisis we really do not have that option. It will be the IMF again but not the nice IMF.

We really don't want the Euro to fail.

Most of our exports go to the Eurozone. Pegging a currency to another currency isn't financial 'freedom'. And starting a currency backed by a state that is basically bankrupt is a flupping massively stupid idea, it would take a nosedive on the markets.

One German guy gives his opinion, so what. We deserve some humble pie after how we behaved for the previous ten years. The Germans came along and bailed us out after our epic stupidity and we're actually trying to blame them on something. We really deserve what we get.

The great thing about having our own sovereignty and currency is that we can print money, creating inflation and effectively wiping out our debt. Just like the UK and the USA have done in the past 2 years.

Speak for yourself, and the Germans are hardly free of all blame for the problems which are affecting Europe as a whole right now.

As I said elsewhere, I welcome his comments and hope that others like him follow in his footsteps in order to remove any doubt that the EU in its current guise is utterly shambolic.

I just think those jokes are inane and moronic, everytime Germany make an announcement of any description the war is hauled up in some supposedly humourosh remark.

So when does that stop, how much time has to pass, do we mention the Roman bastards when Italy do something.
