......This never happened, story came from Cabin crew... yeah that makes it instantaneously believable......
The story of that deal collapsing didn't come from cabin crew, Dotsy said that he/she heard it from EI cabin crew. Cabin crew would never have been privy to that info, it came from mgmt sources.

The CEO in place at the time (Mannion) was there specifically to start Eastward expansion which he then fecked up.

....... Plus (even if they had an A330 to spare for a jaunt to Dubai and back) why would they fly it all the way over there just so Emirates could have a look. If anything, Emirates would be more likely to send their staff over to check EI over. The story makes no sense.
No-one said anything about 'an A330 going on a jaunt' to DXB. The story (which makes no sense to you) concerns the inaugural flight DUB-DXB with EK staff who had flown to DUB for pre-signing meetings with EI. Previous to this time EI were well regarded in the aviation industry. And as stated above EI were changing their product at the time. So the EK reps, I assume were expecting something different to what the actually got.

Haven't you ever meet someone on a night out, got a snog and a phone number. Then you arrange a date, meet her/him and then realise that your memory of the 1st night wasn't quite as good as you thought?

Slightly off topic but what are Aer Lingus going to do with their new A350's? They're hardly going to replace the A330's which are practically new.

Sorry but Dotsey said in post 16 :
when EI sent their reps to Dubai they sent them along on one of their older 330's
The story (which makes no sense to you)
That's the part of the story we DIDN'T understand ! As quoted above, when we read it at the time it was posted it made no sense. Now having been clarified by others it makes sense.

Who hasn't, it's called beer goggles.

As expat staff based at DXB, it's great to hear about the new route. As with nearly all our new routes, it starts out with the Minibus 330, with an eventual upgrade to the 777 depending on load factor. With more A380 routes launching every few months it should enable 777's to be redeployed. Early days yet though!

However if it's inflight entertainment your after, the A330's still have the old seatback system which is not on demand in Y class, unlike the rest of the fleet.

What do you mean by "seatback"?,im thinking of booking them in January,i presume in not having on demand means i wont get to pick what movies i can watch?

Yes sorry guys, It is an individual screen for each seat, with a selection of tv, movies, and music, along with Airshow flight information channel, but on a loop system.

The 330's were due to be phased out sometime ago hence it lacks our ICE on demand system with 600 channels, and on our latest aircraft ICE Digital Widescreen with 1200 channels.

Very surprised they announced it as a 3 class configuration, as I didnt think Ireland would have a Market for a First class product these days. Rumours around HQ prior to the press release were that it would just be Business and Economy offered, similar to our Abu Dhabi based friends.

I agree but perhaps the had an easier job of freeing up a 3 class A330 over a 2 class?

Any idea who the preferred handler in Dublin will be ??

Does anyone know when it will be possible to book flights with these guys?

The website is terrible and the booking page (which I eventually found) doesn't allow Dublin to be set as a departure point

    Cheers for that.

That link at least allows me to search for flights but I cannot see prices or book.

The "Make a booking" link still doesn't allow Dublin as a departure airport

checked fares today fro first few weeks, starts at €509 then increases to €559 in FEB, first class is €3699. Also notice that all taxes are €34.99. This is for DUB-DXB-DUB.

Some days, Y fares are over €1000 euro even at end of January. Seems to be always a Sunday though, weither they anticipate sunday being a big day for travellers.

Nice one, just done a quick search there on a sample fare and they are €112 cheaper than Etihad on a return route from Dublin to Bangkok as to be fair the majority of their business will be onwards connections to Asia and Australia, €668 with Emirates to Bangkok compared to €781 with Etihad, if they can keep this pricing model they will be onto a winner and hopefully we will see 777's in Dub as a result if the load is good.

Still however for some one like myself who lives in Kerry it is cheaper and easier to fly from Cork to Heathrow and connect there when you consider the €75 + €12 cost of getting the train and bus to Dublin Airport from Killarney.

People will fly the weirdest ways if it is cheap enough, I was on my flight from Bangkok home this year with Etihad and I was seated next to a couple who had flown from Sydney with lowcost Tiger Airways to Bangkok and were flying to Johannesburg via Abu Dhabi and had a 12 hour stopover in Abu Dhabi and their journey from Sydney to Johannesburg was going to take nearly 40 hours. I remembered the quote by Father Jessop from Fr. Ted, "We'll go around by Southern Yemen". Weird as biscuits for a few euro! On such a long haul I'd definitely shell out and fly direct!

Ground Handling ? I figured it would be Servisair .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,833 ✭✭✭✭Jamie2k9

Servisair doing ramp only. EK taking on staff to do the rest.

With regard to the vacancies advertised, we've heard they will be to oversee the ground handlers, which is most likely to be servisair, in line with similar agreements in Gatwick and other UK airports. Passenger handling & ramp will be outsourced

Agree Tenger. Something I'll never understand is why AL have never gone to HK/Beijing. With all the Chinese in the country, surely there is an opportunity begging here.

Of course, now Emirates are coming into Dublin, I think AL have really missed an opportunity here.
