I was on the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin the other day and, in the car hold, I spotted at least two brand new, unregistered, big Bus Éireann buses - the type used for long distance routes.

Didn't know they bought them from Britain.

    OMG.

Don't they realise we suffered 800 years of oppression?

If 'we' do, they are probably twice the cost of UK or European ones.

Could they not have come from mainland Europe via UK?

We used to make money too!!!

I'd imagine that the buses are transported like this all the time, livery etc would be applied at the factory.

The fact that they were on a ferry from the UK isn't an indication that they were purchased there.

I don't see what the problem is, its not like we HAVE a bus builder in Ireland.

My car came on a boat from France, there's a damn good chance yours did too.

Nah, I don't drive any of that French rot! :p

I saw those same buses. They are made by Irizar who are Spanish. The chassis is probably Scania or Volvo which are Swedish.

There is bus manufacturing in Ballymena but not coaches as those two are.

Dublin Bus get theirs from Scotland (Alexander-Dennis) AFAIK. Use them for 10+ years and then sell them to private companies in the UK/Ireland.

Here's a fact that is somewhat interesting:

Most countries don't use double decker buses at all and a lot of open top buses that you see being used here end in the UK for city tours and up being exported.

I've seen this now in a few countries, i.e. open top RHD buses in LHD countries. I saw a few recently in Las Vegas touring the strip that still had their UK reg plate on them along with the US one. I didn't take any pics but just found one online of a right hooker in Fisherman's Wharf, San Fran:

You'd also be surprised how many of the Leyland Olympians in use around the place are ex-Dublin Bus.

That is interesting. I wonder if they put extra doors in on the other side to allow passengers to alight / board onto the footpath. Or do they pull up facing the traffic or in specially laid out stops.

My uncle who lives in Edinburgh did tell me about being in Argentina and getting on a bus which had an old Lothian Buses sign upstairs which would support your story.

When I was in Hong Kong I explained to the tour guide about where the ubiquitous Wrights buses were made. It took about 3 or 4 goes to explain it and when I finally did she wasn't overly interested.

Think about it the market for buses in Ireland would be quite small due to our small size and most likely some of the big bus dealers would have the distribution rights for Ireland too.

Blacks Surf school have a 16A down in Achill Island.... Looks class when in remote Ireland you see an old Dublin Bus plodding along.

See a lot of Dublin Bus buses going up the N2 a lot. Presume they get shipped out up North.

There's some of the old Leylands with a preservation order on them too AFAIK.

    Dont go there ....

The first one delivered was diven out of the factory by Albert Reynolds .....and then broke down......then they fixed it ...........then it broke down again. Thats pretty much where and when the Irish bus industry began its sorry end ;)

Oh and if anyone wants to buy one of those newer Irish English buses, they can do here .....

Yeah, it's funny seeing buses that were obviously primarily used in the UK running in Vegas / San Fran.

Dublin Bus are plenty big enough to buy directly - no dealers involved.

There's ambulance, fire engine and road gritter manufacturers in the midlands/west. They're all built on European van chassis though. Have seen brand new Highway Authority branded Romaquip gritters on a flatbed before.

London Bus have ordered new buses with new engines that were 60% more fuel efficient at roughly 6mpg !

Volvo B7TL has a 7.3 litre diesel engine with between 215 and 250 hp.

They're PUT TOGETHER in Irvine in Scotland from a chassis from Sweden. Dublin Bus bought 650 of these over the years.
