Was heading up the M7 tonight, just before Mountrath we could see flashing blue lights and orange strobes up ahead about a mile. We could see 2 fire brigades heading towards us and going down a slip road so we knew something was up. under a minute later, the fire brigades were passing us, and stopped up ahead where a roadblock type mobile sign was.

Anyhow the traffic started queuing up, we were maybe 4 cars from the front, we could see the cars starting to queue up behind up, hazards on etc. 20 minutes in, there was quite a line of traffic queuiung up in a very orderly way in 1 lane.

When in my rearview I could see a car flying up the empty outside lane, thought it must be emergency services, but no. Something more important than that. A Passat TDI. followed a minute later by an A4 TDI and then a 320.

When the accident cleared (Was a Renault Trafic on fire) they made heavy work of merging the traffic

I know this is a rant, but this was clearly a serious accident, this sort of ignorance really annoys me, I know it didn't make me any later, but just annoyed me.

There are people who are oblivious or willfully ignorant in every walk of life. The make and model of the car is irrelevant - it's the common link between those drivers that matters.

I know I'm stereotyping, but they were all German diesel saloons :)

Mmmm...all German cars though I couldn't fail to notice ;)

Seriously though, this only happened me badly once. I was relaxed because not in a hurry anywhere but who knows what business or state of mind someone is in? I've had a midnight rush up the motorway once in my life where someone close was in life-threatening emergency surgery.

Most likely of course it was just impatience on the part of all three!

Welcome to Ireland, the land of the brain dead, idiot motorist.

You mean these ignorant people were doubling the length of the traffic jam by leaving one lane empty. Very ignorant of them.

You mean some sensible drivers saw the ignorant ways of the other drivers and tried to correct them, by actually shortening the queue (something, which for example is the law in a country with sensible traffic laws and drivers, like Germany).

You mean the ignorant drivers (the one that were lengthening the traffic jam) tried to prevent the sensible drivers to use the correct procedure for this situation (zip merging, again only required by law in countries with sensible traffic laws)

This isn't Germany or any other country

It's Ireland. Nobody mentioned anything about other countries, your argument and logic is pointless

The drivers are impatient , reckless and ignorant. Queue like everyone else or don't bother driving

I mentioned Germany, as they implemented that law, because they actually did studies to show that it is the most efficient way.

    For some explanations why, read:
    http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/driving/zipmerging.php
    http://www.worcsgam.org.uk/zip_merging.html

If you don't understand why queuing in a single lane, while a second lane is empty, causes problems in traffic flow, lengthens traffic jams and leads to road rage, don't bother driving.

    Simple as.

But is it the fault of the GErman saloons or the Irish drivers?

There isn't a chance that the A4 TDI, BMW 320 and Passat TDI were undercover/unmarked cops? I don't know just a possibility...

Seriously doubt it, I know there are a few unmarked 3 Series knocking about, but I've never seen an unmarked Passat or A4, especially around the N7.

Use both lanes, merge in turn, absolutely the most efficient way to queue on a motorway. Reduces the extent of the ripple effect of 'false' traffic jams upriver of the original cause.

The hard shoulder is available for emergency services.

Now if there were people speeding down the hard shoulder then that's reckless.

When the fire brigarde let the traffic go, it wasn't both lanes open, and it was single lane for a good bit after the accident. the 3 mavericks actually slowed everyone down considerably as they made such a job of merging into the traffic. Had there been 1 single lane, it wouldn't have taken as long to get moving again,

If you had a situation as you described, where there were 2 lines of traffic queued back, it would have been mayhem merging those 2 lanes together. This is Ireland remember.

That's just a small detail though.

I have seen a few unmarked 520d's, 3-Series and A4 TDI's before, but you're right never seen an unmarked Passat, but that doesn't mean they don't have them.

completely agree..if theres two lanes , you stay in the lane you are in and form two queues, unless otherwise directed.

I lived in Belgium for a couple of years and for the most part they are nice people and pretty relaxed. However on a motorway or dual carriageway they tend to adopt this single lane thing in heavy traffic - madness in my eyes!

Anyhow, in these circumstances they would leave a whole lane open for no reason and I often took advantage of same, much to the chagrin of other drivers. On more than one occasion as I was cruising up the 'free' lane with intention of merging further up and I had other drivers regularly pull in to my path to block my progression!

Wouldn't have anything to do with people in the "orderly" lane, stopping so they could rubber neck the situation..?
The "German" buses were just trying to keep out the way, and go home...?
