Does anyone know how often takeaways are supposed to change their chips cooking oil. i have slightly high cholesterol and one at least use vegetable oil which i understand is the better of the two. But I think how often it is changes counts too. I do not eat chips often but sometimes I give in....

The only way you'll know how often they change the oil is to ask them.

...and there are plenty of better options than take away chips to eat when your out busy.

Ask them? They'll be able to tell you or else point you in the right direction.

Oh em, left overs from the night before? A salad? A sandwich?*, Homemade Soup? All of these can be prepared the night before and carried around.

*Not a fan of bread myself but its an easy option adn better than chips.
**Maybe it's 'cause I love my car but I would never ever ever eat it in. Especially chips, they stink :D

    WTF?

You can't eat a sandwich or wrap in your car??

If you have high cholesterol and are still willing to clog your arteries with grease then off with you.

Wether or not a chipper changes oil once every week or once every two weeks won't make a blind bit of difference after that heart attack hits!

Although I did hear a cardiologist on Matt Cooper giving out about how poor the food is in hospitals and they still serve chips etc.

    So every cloud etc..

    Worried about what?

How unhealthy people continue to eat unhealthy food?

Why would that worry me? It's your body, if you want to continue to eat chips instead of something healthy even thou you've high cholesterol then enjoy.

Do you actually believe that fat in your diet clogs your arteries? I'm not saying eating chips fried in vegetable oil is healthy but that statement is nonsense.

Furthermore it does make a difference how often the oil is changed, oil that is fried and refried is going to be excessively oxidised

    You are delusional.

    I'm out.

Who sh*t in your cornflakes? She stated that she only eats them 'now and then', I'd eat chips from a takeaway occasionally and normally I'm fastidious about food

She also implied that chips were literally the only thing she could eat in the car when out and about. That is ridiculous.

Lads, rather than giving the op a hard time for eating chips, and whether thats a good idea, can we please get back to the topic. Can anyone answer the question: Chippers: are they required, and do they, change cooking oil at regular, set intervals. Thank you.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,886 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

I'm pretty sure there isn't a requirement to change it after a set number of days. Restaurant I worked in changed theirs whenever it started to get a bit greasy/dirty. It kind of depends on how busy the chipper is too.

It's kind of a pointless question though cause you might go in one day when they've literally just changed the oil and then go in the next time and it's the last day before they're gonna change it.

    I don't eat cornflakes. Porridge FTW ;)

The delusional comment was more pointed at the fact that the OP thinks they can't eat anything else in the car.

I love chips as well. Especially dripped in garlic sauce. I have no problem with them but I don't eat them because there is nothing else to eat which is what seems the OP is doing.

My point is if I had high cholesterol and continued to eat deep fried chips I wouldn't worry to much about the freshness of the oil.

Even chips cooked in freshly changed oil are bad for your cholesterol.

The OP needs to think outside the chip box and eat something healthy in their car...salads, wraps, sambos, rolls....the opportunities are endless

I agree completely there are so many things that can be taken with you and eaten on the go that are healthy and this would cut out worrying about cholesterol the list is too long to mention but people are too lazy to prepare a healthy snack in advance - I think some people just cant think straight because they eat CHIPS all the time and its proven a poor diet can make you go la la after a while :D your brain slows down and you become lethargic and you cant function properly.

I agree with you nowayjosie i have high cholestral down to a bad diet and i have now changed my diet as i did not want to start medication:D:D i find if i eat a takeaway even once in a while i feel lethargic.
I would stick to the food i am eating now which i know are good for me in the long run

I bet you do stick to it and you'll feel great so long as you opt for the healthy stuff which is much cheaper in the long run and much tastier too. Any thing deep fried is bad for you regardless if the oil is changed every day! Children that are fed on this kind of crap do very badly at school and its known that some of them nod off in class, this is not to mention the weight problems caused by living from the chipper for dinner, and for snacks. :D

If OP is worried about cholesterol then avoid fast food completely, simples...
I speak from experience, I had high cholesterol and lost 4.5 stone and got my cholesterol back on track in just 6 months while driving for a living, I found it easier to imagine the chipper didnt exist instead of being worried about their food, oil, salt ect..

Thanks, it has made my life better and my wife and kids, we all have a different diet now. Im not perfect and do eat some of the wrong things now and then but I am able to control my weight and cholesterol. I can walk 5k now without breaking into a sweat and I couldnt walk 5 meters before..

I found it easy to completely change my diet and I cut out all sugar, salt, processed food and fast food. I think it was the new diet that made it easy instead of trying to rearrange the diet I had.

Sure you don't. The foremost scientists of their field don't know exactly how atherosclerothic plaques form, obviously you know better

Nice way to put words in my mouth. I would have thought someone who was around this forum long enough wouldnt resort to something as silly..clearly not the case

In any event..seeing as you seem to agree that fat in you diet clogs arteries...what do you suggest?? Perhaps we should all cut foods such as oily fish, nuts , oils and pretty much all meat from our diet. Because yeah.. they are so obviously the things that are going to cause heart attacks...

You shouldn't say the OP silly as he/she just gave a genuine reply Kaiser said "I do believe that fat in your diet etc..." Kaiser didn't say essential fatty acids in your diet clogs your arteries - and do you think it might be easier to debate the subject if your replies / messages were not in Cryptic - do you like forums the reason I ask is you seem irritated - the OP didn't suggest cutting out all fats as you suggest - the foods / oils your referring to contain essential fatty acids - so people on the forum are not as SILLY as you might like to think - therefore FYI - Fat in your diet clogs your arteries!.

Of course I don't agree that fat clogs your arteries. There are hunter-gatherer tribes all over the world that have around 50% dietary fat in their diet yet don't succumb to heart disease

Yes, but they're not eating transfat/hydrogenated veg oils.

I'm not even sure if that was the point. I only skimmed this thread for the lolz and read the last post :D

A good point, but usually people come out with statements about high-fat diets without specifying the composition of various fats. Hunter-gatherers would be eating mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats

There is no such thing as healthy chips - so you have a choice be unhealthy or eat a proper balanced diet! I'm assuming your able to glean some information from the OP's so there's your answer!
