    Gi or NoGi?

Either way it ends the same way, will only make a difference to how fast Braulio destroys him. Assuming Braulio takes it semi seriously of course.

Is this not Braulio's all day long?

Braulio will absolutely run through him, no bother to him, don't know how anyone can think Diaz has a chance. Fair play to Nick for taking it though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭Kieran81

surprised but delighted braulio took it , not much to gain at all and stands to lose a hell of a lot if he were to be beaten , but still willing to go out and take him on . think people are wrong to underestimate diaz purely because he's an mma fighter and not a full time bjj competitor , plenty of mma fighters have beaten bjj specialists before. having said that , still hard to see anything other than a braulio victory, lookin forward to it

    Gi or NoGi?

It's going to be a Gi match. Fair play to both guys for stepping up and taking this one on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭pablohoney87

Really don't see the point in this.
    Is it purely for publicity?
Diaz is nowhere near this level and neither guy really stands to gain a whole lot. What's the point in people saying 'fair play to diaz' if nobody believes he has a chance?
if anything fair play to braulio. He's the only one risking anything here.

I heard Nick Diaz is gonna give Braulio the finger instead of shaking hands

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭UL_heart_throb

i'm actually interested in this. Randy fought jacare and jacare couldn't submit him, jacare was one of the best in the world at grappling at that time. I would think nick diaz would be a lot better than randy at ground but probably no where near as good as randy as defending take down.

if diaz goes out to submit him, braulio will surely catch him.

if diaz goes out not to be submitted, over i presume a 10 minute time frame, i think he could get dominated points wise but not get submitted.

does anyone have diaz's grappling credentials to hand? has he won any pan-ams or other biggish tournies in the last decade?

Hard to find any info on his grappling record but I got this much:
Some of the major titles he [Diaz] has won include the US Purple Belt Open in 2004 and a Pan American Brown Belt Medium Weight Division title in 2005. He also owns a victory over renowned grappler Jorge"Macaco"Patino in competition via kneebar.

    WHERE YOU AT DIAZ??? :D

Apparently Braulio was at 189lbs and wouldn't make the 180 limit so they re-negotiated to 185. But Diaz was pissed about the missed weight and decided not to turn up.

They agreed to give Braulio another chance to meet the weight as well and Braulio weighed in at 180 on the morning itself.

I'm only quoting from reading articles but this one would suggest he weighed in at 185

    http://blog.chron.com/fighting/2012/05/nick-diaz-no-shows-again/

[Estima said he was ready and he seemed upset that Diaz didn’t show.

“I’m a professional athlete. I never thought he wouldn’t show up,” said Estima. “I came from the U.K., I made the weight, I made 185 pounds, I didn’t expect him to not show up. I don’t understand why he’d run away.”

At one point, to try and save the super fight Robert Drysdale offered to face Estima, but he declined saying he was prepared to face Diaz.

Estima also said that he would fight Diaz in MMA if that’s what he wanted.

“I’ll fight him in MMA. If maybe he feels more comfortable there, I’ll do it. … I gave up a lot of things to make this to happen. I came here to fight, you said you were going to be here, were going to give your purse to charity. It is very disrespectful.”]

Forgive the bad maths, but whether its189. 185 or 180lbs, wouldn't that but them in the same bracket if it were a regular comp division? And why the Friday weight in? Why not the morning of as is the norm for BJJ.

Diaz brothers facebook says the promoters were shady favoring brazillians, the purse and weight were changed at the last minute so it just wasnt going to happen. Too bad because probably 90% of the audience were watching for diaz.

The really damning thing for Diaz was that this was a Charity event [they were raising money for St. Jude's. Which helps Children with Cancer. Diaz even stated he would donate his money to the charity]

    Ronda Rousey is a lasher!

Braulio didn't say "Ronda", he said "Lana" - as in Lana Stefenac, cesar gracie black belt.

    http://twitter.com/#!/openmatradio
Just to clarify, we spoke with Lana Stefanac this morning and it was her that saw Braulio weigh in at 180, NOT Ronda Rousey.

    Because it was catchweight.
Nick is a 77kg fighter, Estima is 88kg. They agreed to meet in the middle at 180lbs. When he misses weight saying "sure its still the same bracket" undermines point of catchweight to begin with.

Looks like Estima missed weight so Nick decided to bale. Then Estima says he made weight on saturday, but tbh that means nothing if he knew Nick wasn't showing. I'm not sure he said "Ronda" seen him make weight, that whole thing is a bit strange. Nick really screwed himself by leaving, Estima was the one who missed weight and was at fault if it didn't go ahead from that point.

Would of been interesting if he accepted Drysdale's offer. But I'm not surprised that he didn't.

You're right, though I have to admit that I like how neither of the Diaz brothers give a **** about things like this.

Well look, I will readily admit i'm a braulio estima student so naturally I'm going to be biased.

However simply looking at the facts, which guy has never had any issues making weight or turning up to fight, and which guy has repeatedly showed he's unstable and unreliable, with a habit of just not showing up when he doesnt feel like it?

Initially I was just like "Lol, there goes nick diaz again" but now I'm getting a bit irritated. Vanishing like that was pretty disrespectful but now it seems like diaz's team are out to call braulio a liar.

The guy who asked "ronda? you said ronda rousey?" is layziethesavage, a member of Diaz's team. He was also the one asking pointed questions about weighin times, trying to makeout like braulio hadnt made weight.

EDIT: Wasn't finished - this is just frustrating because Braulio is a super nice guy and took this matchup even though he didn't have much to gain by winning, and a lot to lose. He was nothing but respectful to diaz, and diaz got into one of his little moods and just didn't turn up - and now is trying to pin it all on braulio.

Braulio says they have footage of him weighing in 180 on the morning of the event. I would say diaz has no such thing.

Moving on from the Diaz no show, i thought the rest of the matches were excellent particularly the Victor Estima v Kron Gracie match.

I'm not sure it's possible to have a balanced discussion if you are biased but I'll try.
However simply looking at the facts, which guy has never had any issues making weight or turning up to fight,
Before we go digging through each fighters history, Estima missed weight on Friday. That's a fact.
Afaik, Nick missed weight once before too, he was 9lbs over for a fight at 160 a few years ago. The same amount the Estima was over today.
Buts let's be realistic here, Nick fights at 170, he wasnt under pressure to make 180, so going that route to lay blame on Nick is a bad plan IMO.
As for fights. Afaik, Nick has never failed to turn up for a fight. Press bonferance yes, but not fight afaik.
Initially I was just like "Lol, there goes nick diaz again" but now I'm getting a bit irritated. Vanishing like that was pretty disrespectful but now it seems like diaz's team are out to call braulio a liar.
Where have they called him a liar?
They said he missed weight on Friday, he did, he admits he did. That's not a lie.
They said that the organisers gave him more time to make weight and changed the limit. That's also true. Estima said so on video.
The guy who asked "ronda? you said ronda rousey?" is layziethesavage, a member of Diaz's team. He was also the one asking pointed questions about weighin times, trying to makeout like braulio hadnt made weight.
It's a reporter. It's his job to ask questions.
He misheard the part about Rousey and clarified afterwards that it was Lana.
He isn't "making out" that Estima missed missed weight. That whats happened. They agreed to a Friday weigh-in. And he was 189.
I don't see how questions a reporter asked is anything to do with Nick.

Are you suggesting that Diaz didnt or couldn't make 180? I've no idea if he actually stood on a scales or not. But as I said, 180 isnt a big ask for him.

I don't mean to come across as defending Nick. I'm not. He was wrong to leave and he is stubborn to the point of childishness.
I just want to provide a somewhat straight view.
But Estima was initially unprofessional for missing weight. Fighters are routinely slated for missing weight by a lot.
He was in the wrong. He attempt to rectify it by making 180 on the day. If he did, that should of been the issue over. If anything that's a better solution for Nick. But as I said Nick screwed it up for himself.

There was a huge weight difference between caio terra and jeff glover in their match. It is different in jiu jitsu than MMA, 10lbs from what i can tell is a big deal in MMA but in jiu jitsu we have an absolute division and athletes of different weight compete regularly.

Whatever his reasons for not doing it I have seriously lost respect for him, Only time I ever check out a UFC is if he or his brother are fighting. I suppose that disrespectful attitude is only cool until he disrespects you or something you care about.

It makes a massive difference when the heavier lad is most likely better too, if they are about the same skill level not so much..

There is open weight in MMA also. Although its rare these days. BJ Penn fighting Lyoto Machida is a common example.
I agree that its not as big a deal in BJJ as MMA, but they agreed on 180lbs, the fact that absolute weight is common is irrelevant in terms of the agreement.

Nick's I don't understand Nick at all. I don't think anyone does. TBh I think all the weed he smokes has him so paranoid. When the organisers gave Estima more time he thinks everyone it out to get him. And he runs off to hide from society. I just know how Cesar Grachie, his brother Nate or Jake Shields or anyone at his camp don't calmly explain to him that letting him try make 180 on fight day is better for him than if he made it off the bat.

It's a shame we didn't get to see it. Estima is training with the blackzillians, planning a move to MMA so maybe in the future this fight can happen, will probably need to be at 170 though

I think it may have been even more than 10lbs. Terra fights at Galo while Glover fights at Pena. That's 57kg vs 70kg. Massive.

I don't agree. When skills are more or less equal, the extra weight is very helpful.

Sorry the way I phrased that was a little unclear. I wasn't implying Diaz had any problem making weight, I was saying Braulio has never (afaik) had issues making weight. I was then also making the point that braulio has never been known to just not turn up to an event, whereas Diaz has done that a few times. Apologies for the confusion.

I don't see how questions a reporter asked is anything to do with Nick.

The title implies it pretty strongly don't you think? 'we don't think braulio estima ever made weight' Then going to Ronda Rousey and getting her to post a pretty pissed off video? Seems like they're trying pretty hard to make it look like he's a liar. And I think the questions were phrased in a way that wasn't exactly impartial. I think the fact that he's a part of diaz's team and he's the only reporter being so insistent about weight and trying to catch braulio out in saying something inaccurate is more than a coincidence.
I don't mean to come across as defending Nick. I'm not. He was wrong to leave and he is stubborn to the point of childishness.

I'm really not sure about the weight. I keep finding conflicting reports - have you been able to find anything concrete? In the vid braulio says nothing was ever written down or soldily agreed and he was under the impression that the weighins would be saturday morning, not the day before. The only source i've seen for braulio not making weight on friday was, again the asme reporter from diaz's camp.

Cesar Gracie has gone on record as saying braulio made 180 on the saturday morning. If Nick was unhappy that braulio wasnt 180 the day before, i really dont understand how braulio making that weight with far less time to rehydrated and eat is anything but an advantage for Nick. That's even assuming braulio was meant to be 180 the day before. Again you would think if he could be 180 on the day of the fight, he could be 180 the day before when he knew he had far longer to rehydrate.

And don't worry i'm biased but only in the sense that i'm more inclined to believe Braulio :) if anyone has found any good sources i'll take them into account when forming my opinion.

Unless anyone was privy to negiations between Diaz,Estima and the organisers most of this is guesswork. The only thing that has been confirmed by both sides is that Braulio made 180 on the day.

I wouldn't put much credence in a guy with a blog and an agenda yammering questions at a person whose English is far from perfect. Given their respective histories,I don't think it's surprising that people would accept Braulio's word over Diaz's camp in the absence of confirmation either way.

How is the reporter part of Nicks team? I've no idea how you got that. It sounded like he said Rounda, the reporter asked was that Rounda Rousey, he said yes. So they asks Rounda and she said she wasn't there, hence the title. That's completely reasonable.
    They since clarified that point.
I think you should watch it again, they were genuine questions. The one about why was it Friday and not Saturday like normal would be in his favour not Nicks.
I'm really not sure about the weight. I keep finding conflicting reports - have you been able to find anything concrete? Well he turned up to weigh in on Friday, so it's fairly obvious that's what was to happen.
He doesnt say that he thought it was Saturday he said that they told him he could. They being the organisers, and that was after he already missed weight. That's what pissed off ND apparently, "special treatment". As I said he's v. Paranoid.
Cesar Gracie has gone on record as saying braulio made 180 on the saturday morning. I agree that's pretty much what I said above. Estima rectified the issue. That's a plus for Nick. His team should of made that clear.
And don't worry i'm biased but only in the sense that i'm more inclined to believe Braulio :) if anyone has found any good sources i'll take them into account when forming my opinion.
I believe him too. I don't think he's denying that he missed weight at first and made 180 the next day. I think Diaz should of taken the fight at that stage as it was no different to the one he agreed to.
But Nick being Nick, once he blows up, there's no reasoning. He has some pretty clear mental issues.

I have to agree with what someone on the UG said. I won't believe it until I see the cancelled check. I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of Layzie the Savage's mouth because Layzie's mouth is permanently attached to Nick's scrotum [He posts ad nauseum how he hangs with the Diaz Bros and is part of their team]

That doesn't come across as sincere at all. Its more of an "I'm sorry I was caught." one.

Because first she blew out Cruz' knee, then she was witness to Braulio Estima's weigh-in. It seems the last two big stories to come out have her name in them, would you not be pissed too?

I heard she was injecting Overeem with testosterone and she sold pain killers to Chris Leben ;):pac:*

*This post is supposed to be a joke, don't sue me Dana/Ronda.
