Main driver and name on log book

My dad and myself got a new car today which will be the family car as he only has a van at the moment but once he picks something else up will be mine. I filled out the log book in my name while he called the insurance and told him he would be on the log book. He's insured as the main driver with myself and my mother as names drivers.
Will this make any difference with the insurance?

Surely the father can't be the main driver on the insurance policy of a car which doesn't belong to him/registered in his name?

    It isn't registered yet.
He'll most likely be using it more than me because I live away from home for most of the year

Him and my mother have always insured each others car depending on who already has the other car insured when a new one comes around and never had trouble.
Found it weird that they asked who would be on the log book though!

Pretty sure it's ok when it's your spouse's car but anyone else it isn't.He shouldn't be the main driver on it as he has no insurable interest in the car.

Ha -- wait till something goes wrong (a claim ) then you'll find out what your insurance company say

AFAIK you're supposed to have a 'vested interest' in the vehicle you insure.

All three of our cars are in my name and both of us (woman and me) drive all three at (different) times and are named accordingly. However she mainly drives the car I'm supposed to be the main driver on and I the other two. Only reason we do it that way is for cheaper insurance rates. I know it's not exactly correct but we both have a 'vested interest' in all vehicles.

Truth be known if either of us were unlucky enough to have an accident (touches wood) our insurance could *technically* be null and void.

You can actually have an insurable interest in things that don't belong to you...

I'd say you need to ring your own insurance company, OP

I'll ring them in the morning, thanks!
Bit annoying if had to change the name on the log book again down the road, just adding another owner to the list and what not ya know!

It's a new thing asking that the reg owner be the main insurer, named drivers are not meant to drive the car full time only occasionally.
I think this started when parents were insuring cars for kids ie civics subaru's etc. just another way to see who owned the car.
