What's the best way to pay for cattle bought privately from someone you don't know e.g. from a donedeal ad?

wire it straight into their account with the IBAN number
Pretty much impossible for it to bounce and transaction is free as far as i know.

Bank draft my second choice. Much more robust than a cheque but if you know someone in a retail bank they will tell you there is still a possibility it can bounce but it is remote.

I still pay for all the cattle via cheque, never have a problem even dealing with new people. but they may get a reference on the quite from others I have dealt with. The areas I buy most of the cattle I find trust and honesty unreal and have never been done by anyone.

If someone wants to cod you it can be done even with wiring in the money into to account and it is easier again to be done using a bank draft.

So best to know your client and get a reference check from someone if you suspect something.

How could you get done with a bank draft  The bank won't write the draft unless the money is there to cover it.

Would you write out a cheque if the money was not there to cover it???

This is the way I understand it can be done
Go to bank and get BD. Go go home and empty your account via online banking. Give BD to your victim. Take goods:(

Personally I'd be careful with any person I have not dealt with before.
When buying animals in a yard consider offering a deposit... probably wont be required but shows fairly good intent.

If its wired in it can not be taken out of your account without the bank staff and you knowing

No your first paragraph is not possible with a ligit bank draft as the money leaves an account the minute its is written, the main word there being ligit. Just after thinking how it maybe able to be done as you say but not posting it here as I don't want to give people ideas:D:D.

Look if a conman is out to get you, he will. be it a bank draft, cheque or transfer

Not true when you buy a bank draft the money is removed from your account. Usually what happens with bank drafts is either a forgery would you know a BOI, ACC, NIB or Ulsterbank draft. Some people just forge them and even the banks accept them until they sheck for the funds in that bank draft's number.

The other thing forger's do is get a draft for twenty euro and change it to twenty thousand. If you sold cattle for twenty two thousand clint gave you a deposit of 2K in cash and then the draft. All sort of tricks.

When I buy cattle I give a deposit by cheque if the number is small I might give the cheque for the lot and allow him to cash it before I remove the cattle and often the same if the number is up a bit. However a lot of clients are happy with the cheque on the day.

The thing I worry about is make sure he has the CMMS moval certs, and the number of movements not all dealers/farmers will have the back of the cards signed. trust works both ways.

The same as a cheque, whether borrowed or owned. It is a criminal offence to write out a cheque knowing that it will bounce.

No its not, as its a bank official that writes a draft and they check there and then if the money is in the account, so no money no draft, whereas with a cheques is write away :D

No sh*t sherlock, but it could be very hard to prove this was the case if it went to law. Pity they don't bring a system similar to eastern Europe if a cheque is bounced. Couple of months in the clink and that will teach the offender :D

I suppose at the end of the day it's up to the seller to specify! At the end of the day it comes down to a certain level of trust and walk away if you feel there's something amiss.

As the buyer the only other things you can do is check the cards to see details are correct and get a movement cert. That covers it I think?
