Moving to and Commuting from Sallins

    Hi All,

i've recently moved to Sallins and was wondering if anyone can offer some insights as to whether I should utilise the train, bus or drive in to work.
I work near Holles St/Merrion Square and am lucky enough to have car parking in work and have always driven in the past.

With the increase in petrol costs and the move to Sallins I'm wondering if I should keep driving or not and need to look into the whole tax saver ticket option. I have the following dilemas based on what information I can find on line:

    • Train only goes to Heuston and then I have to get the feeder bus to Nassau St and then walk to my office. This, I'm assuming, will take at least 1hr 20minutes???
    • I think there is a commuter bus that goes into Stephen's Green but this seems to take an hour and then I'd have to walk 15 minutes or so equalling the above time for my commute.
    • It seems that the train fares for Sallins to Heuston are approx €70 a week (non tax saver) meaning petrol costs are cheaper. I do realise that with travel saver it will be cheaper than this.
Can anyone that does a similar commute possible let me know how they get in and out of work, how much it costs and the time it takes etc?
Any helpful information or advice would be much appreciated.
I can work either 8-4 or 9-5 if I choose.

    Thanks!!

If I were you, consider driving to Hazelhatch instead of Sallins as it's within the Leap card area and the fares are very cheap on Leap; just €2.10 to heuston. You'd also be able to get a taxsaver pass for it plus it's good all year round.

Or even consider just moving up the line to Celbridge/Hazelhatch.

The 145 bus starts right outside the station, goes every 10 minutes at peak times and should not take much more then 30 minutes to Kildare street/Green (although i've only ever taken it as far as D'Olier st).

It will partly depend on where in Sallins and where in Merrion Square - exact location could change things by perhaps 15 minutes. Try this: http://www.journeyplanner.transportforireland.ie/nta/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2

The best option would appear to be train + bus 25a/25b/25x/26 from the Saint John's Road West entrance to Heuston Station which will take you to Merrion Square. Less useful the 66/67 group of buses that operate from Parkgate Street (across river from Heuston Station) to Merrion Square or route 747 from Heuston Luas to College Green (cash fare €6, but included for free on most pre-paid tickets). Having a smart phone to check the real time information for buses would be useful. Alternatively Bus Éireann route 123, especially if there is a stop at O'Connell Bridge, where you can get the 4, 7 or 8 to Merrion Square - but check.

It can get to O'Connell Bridge in 6 minutes. There is no way it would take 30 minutes to Kildare Street. In any case Kildare Street doesn't suit the OP, getting off at Nassau Street would be better.

Thanks for all the advice guys

I don't think driving to Celbridge, getting the train, commuter bus and then the short walk is really much of an option. It just adds more journey time to my commute. I'm hoping to make it as short as possible.

Im not sure if i'm reading the whole tax saver thing correctly or not but it seems that the monthly cost of Sallins to Heuston (point to point) for train, bus & luas in €166 per month. The cost of short hop from Celbridge to HEuston with bus and rail is €132 or luas and rail €155 or bus, luas and rail €190.
Either way the fares work out at about €33 to €47 a week which is near to what I pay in petrol a week. Have I missed something in my calculations?

I might try the journey planner suggestion, thanks for the advice Victor. Although it does seem that my journey will be train and bus if I don't drive so it's going to most likely be an equal cost monetary wise but may mean I can atleast relax on the train etc and read.

I live on Osberstown Road in Sallins and work on Holles St in the city Centre.

can anyone also tell me, realistically, how long does the train take from Sallins to Heuston? Thanks. Route planning and journey times are a pain in the *ss

From experience there can be very long traffic delays in Sallins at several times during the day particularly at peak times and the station causes a lot of this congestion, if driving to the station in Sallins from Naas or Clane you should add at least 15-20minutes to your journey time.

Sallins-Heuston is scheduled at 26-37 minuets, but you would often get in early.

That is the amount you would pay from your pre-tax earnings. Use the calculator at www.taxsaver.ie

Thanks, I saw that was the scheduled time on the website alright but just assumed it would be longer as the public transport system seems to be so unreliable usually.

Might bite the bullet and try the train on Monday morning so.

    Hi Doc,

I'm sorry to say I haven't tried the train/bus/luas commute yet. I've relied on my car these past three weeks since I've moved.

I am hoping to give the train a go this week if at all possible.

Just to let you know the following information:
Petrol:I have roughly spent €160 in 3 weeks on petrol commuting in and out of the city centre. So I'm spending approx €50 a week/ €200 a month/ €10 a day.

Train: I spoke to my payroll dept and they have said that a tax saver ticket for rail/bus/luas would cost me €800 a year/€66 a month/€16 a week.

Saving: By just using the train each day you can see there is a significant saving by purchasing the ticket.

I am planning to get the train on a Mon/Wedn/Fri (€16) and due to after work commitments drive on Tues/Thurs (€20). Total of €36 a week in travel costs. Saving myself €15 a week or €780 a year - which is quite significant.

I hope this is of some help to you. Im planning on getting the train to Heuston and Luas to IFSC and walk to my office. I'd love to hear if you have an alternative route and how you get on or if you've worked out anything similar to me for costs.

    Hi Natty

Thanks for your very helpful and informative breakdown!

I will defo be using public transport once we get settled so that helps alot.

I would also be looking to get the taxsaver which will def save alot.

I believe the train is a good bit cheaper from cellbridge/hhatch even though its only one stop from sallins...

well what can you do, I suppose they have to draw the line somewhere.....

I can tell you that I have been using the train from limerick on monday morning and can tell you the 145 bus from heuston takes 15 mins TOPS to get to Kildare street.

I got it this morning at 9.00 and it was very busy but was sitting in my office for 9.20, the luas will prob suit you better though for the IFSC.

we are actually looking at a house in Osbertstown....

How do you find the area etc??

Ideal location for the train has to be said.

We were looking initially for somewhere in Clane but there is very little on the rental market at the moment.

Sallins being near the N7 too seems perfect.

    Thanks Rasher

You're more than welcome for the "helpful and informative breakdown" :p I'm one of those people that needs the breakdowns and all my options laid out before I can make a decision!! I'll try the 145 bus as I work on Holles st so it'd be handy for me as well.

I'm still looking at bus options but most seem to go from Naas which means driving and finding parking etc. I did look at the celbridge option but I just think that the drive to celbridge each day, then the train, then the bus or luas and the walk is just not worth it. Would rather as few changes in transport modes as possible.

We were also looking to move to Clane originally as my other half has an apartment there and we both loved the area but like you couldn't find anything and when we say the house we moved into we feel in love with it despite not really wanting to move to Sallins. I have to say I really like the area. We walk into Sallins quite a bit with our dogs and it seems nice. There is a very well recommended restaurant on the canal called Canal Walk Cafe and we're hoping to try it soon. The area has a lot of handy shops nearby and Naas town offers some great deli style shops as well as botiques and cafes for sunday brunch. Overall we realyl like the area and are very happy there. We have rented on OSberstaown road and the road itself is really nice, we're a short walk to the train station so it's handy from that aspect.

It's nice to hear of someone else making the same move. We ahven't met anyone as of yet and would like to make some friends in the area but as of yet have not found a way to do so. My mother informs me that unless you ahve children it's difficult to make friends in new areas as an adult :D. If you do move to Sallins feel free to ask any more questions or offer some friendly advice you may have come across - it all helps when you're new to an area!!!!

Sounds silly I'm sure but I'm used to the luas journey on the red line so it's familar and to be honest I was a bit nervous about the whole commute thing so I combined a new journey with something familar. I tool the train and luas combo this morning for the first time and found it to be perfectly fine. I am however going to try the different bus routes people have kindly suggested and see which works out the best for me in order to get to my office.
