    Quick question lads.
As the title states, is a '05 Focus an interference engine?
A mate of mine rang me to say his timing belt snapped and he asked would it need the valves done too. Off the top of my head I'm not sure if it's interference or not. And I've tried doing a bit of googling but can't find out.
    I'm not 100% sure but I think it's a 1.6/1.4 zetec.

    Cheers.

Yes they are an interference engine.
That was the answer I was hoping not to hear!
    Thanks! :)

Hi all, newbie here. I have a 2001 ( reg 2002) 1.4 petrol zetec focus that I picked up for my son. I bought it private because the timing belt had broke. Does anyone know if this is a non-interference engine and could I get away with just replacing the timing belt and resetting the timing , or do I need another engine. Thanks in advance for any help.

It is an interference engine but the cheapest way out is to remove the cylinder head and get it repaired rather than replacing the engine.

As above, there will be valve damage. You also need engine specific tools to correctly set the timing on those engines.

plus the crank bolt usually requires serious force to remove

Thanks a lot for all your help guys I really appreciate it. Have a second wee question. I have rang half the country looking for a replacement engine but they're impossible to get. I have been offered loads of 1.6 engines for it and everyone says they will fit no problem. My question is , will I have to replace the brain too for one out of a 1.6 or will the brain that's in the car ( 1.4 ) do the job. do the job

The ecu programming will be different for the 1.6 then it is for a 1.4 so while the engine may fit, there will likely be issues.

As already advised though, assuming the engine was in good shape before the timing belt failed then having it repaired is the better, and usually cheaper, option.

Thank you Nissan Doctor, I've decided to heed your advice and fix the engine that's in it. I'm told I need to set the timing before I take the head off, is this correct?

No you don't necessarily have to set it before you remove the head but, of course, its very important that the crank position is set before you refit the head and also that the cams are timed correctly when they are fitted.

Are you going to do it yourself? If so this may help...not the same engine but all principles the same: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77563130
