Anyone watching this ? First programme was on there tonight at 8pm on channel4 (sky 135)

The name is a bit misleading. It's not about first time farmers at all.... more about young farmers sons taking over the family farm.

yea i watched it there i thought it was very good 10 times better than ear to the ground and 20 times better than countryfile( apart from adams farm )no simple presenters who know nothing about farming to listen to

Just watched it there now - it wasn't what I was expecting based on the title like you say, but was much better than I was expecting I must say...

Could have been more interesting if they got the parents view - especially of the lad who went auctioning.

I dont understand how he was only getting between £10 and £20 for the six months old pigs. Here, 10 week old weaners seem to be going for about €50 on donedeal...

Asking €50 for 10 week olds and getting €50 are very different things :D

His pigs were a rare breed (i can't remember the name). They were prone to being very fatty and therefore weren't attractive to buyers who would be buying them to fatten for meat. This was the reason given by the slaughter house worker on the programme anyway.

I thought that it was showing 'posh' young lads who's families probably have hundreds of acres of land and get the silver spoon for most of their lives.

It is just a 'reality' programme for young people.

But that's what the public want!!

a bit harsh, yipp that lad who left london and his "made in chelsea" girlfirend might have been a bit of a toff but they were all lads were trying to make a go of it. Farming familes in england tend to be quite a bit different to over here. Many of the farms are much bigger then we have so its a bit unfair to compare. i have a sisyer and brother working in england and both wuld have been dealing with farming familes through work and both say the same thing espically in england. Many of the farms are old eatates which were broken up over time but unlike here were a 5000 acre farm might now be in 50 or 60 parts many of the farm estates were broken up in to 10 or less lots. There are still farmers that have long term leases to the estate (100 years or more in some places).

That said i did find it intresting, espically the lad that left the farm and went back to the mart. That would have been tough for anyone to ask for his old job back so i reckon if he was a toff he'd have stayed on the farm and not bothered with it.

I see one of the guys had the same problem as when I was his age, luckily for him he probably had and estate but I only had a mud shack here to attract:D

Also there was a fair crowd at the young farmers night out, If I dont that around here for farmers under 30 you would have 3 or 4 lads hangs of a slab and smoking John players.

My sister in law in Denmark, hangs with a farmer chap, and he was telling me when in college the ag boys had the pick of the crop of all the young maidens on campus. this has probably change in the last year or two as farms are broke as land over there was the same carry on as buildings over here a few years ago.

Those lads would starve and perish if they had to farm some of the places members on he farm and survive on, and even thrive on

Great to see that you enjoyed the program. farmer life looks more interesting over there as farmers are seen as posh compared to Ireland where they're seen as poor. The farming life is a nice way to live.

The guy with the sheep brought me back night mares! I remember a teacher in schooling telling a lad who was going farming that "one has to be physically strong and mentally tough to farm"!

i remember a teacher saying the same thing to lad in my class when i was in secondary school. Teacher told him that as someone from a farming backround he knew what he was talking about.

The lads response was "well as your eldery parents are at home farming their own while you are here it seems you pocess neither of those qualities". you could have heard a pin drop in the room.

Anyone still watching this: This weeks some lad just got a free 23 bedroom house and 1000 acres. He then went and bought a new combine for 160,000. and then spend 20,000 on Gin and a new jacuzz ta ****!!!

interesting programme but not relevant to here. no lads stuggling on less than 100 acres of poor land. not saying its easy but all the gear certainly helps.

would like to know how the 3 sons waiting on the farm finishes up. got the feeling of serious trouble brewing

500 acres. Which was worse, the new combine or the photo with his landlord, prick Charles?

The cattle and the grain farmers tonight looked like they had a bob or two all right, but the dairy farmer lads didn't look like they were rolling in it to be fair. And by the looks of it, that farm will be spilt some bit anyways...
I thought 'twas a bit unfair the father didn't say what his plans were, so they all knew where they stood.

Ah now, what's he supposed to do - throw all his toys out of the pram and not take over the tenancy cos of the landlord...

If you had the chance of 500 acres of that kinda land coming to you, I'd say you'd be up there shaking his hand as well, and don't be trying to pretend otherwise ;)

Thought twas a more than a bit unfair on the father (who was only in his 50s) that the 3 sons and daughter in law were on national telly whining about not knowing how much they would be left. Get off their arses and make their own life first.

It's a metaphor. The intro gave the full details of the ownership, but afterwards it was from the young lads angle.

I was thinking the same, I would shake his willie for 500 ac's, still though its on a tenant basis so doesnt really own it. The house looks well run down, and a new combine for only 500 ac FFS. Facilities on all the farms so far look well behind whats on farm in Ireland I taught. I have yet to see a seriously run looking operation. Seems to be plenty of hot girls handing around Agri UK:rolleyes:

I thought the 3 dairy boys were good, and they may have genuine problems in future whenever the auld lad decides what to do. Still though, the oldest lade and his missus (A, Hole :D) went off and bought themselves 47 acres so money isn't all that tight. Plus they had 200 cows or something too.

I thought their stock handling was a bit dodgy with that mad fecker in the field. He drove at it with the jeep!! My auld lad would do his nut if ya did that. Not for safety reasons mind, but for potentially damaging the jeep!!

The young lad on Charlies land is a joke. Free house, free land and bought a new combine and a jacuzzi. And the house falling down!! Madness.

And as for the big lump of an 18 year old. I mean, what farme would go on holiday for a week and leave an 18 year old to buy 30k worth of cattle? He only got 7k worth I think, but still. Surely the father would buy them before/after he went. And the most the young lad would have to do is feed and herd what they have for the week?

Jasus, I forgot about the lad that hit the heifer with the jeep, And the wife inside it who was a vet!!! I would have given anyone that done that his walking papers, also the lads had 200 cows and seemed to fail to bring a dead calf from a straight forward looking calving.

bet the guys with the 500 ac only climbed on the combine for the cameras and had an army of workers around, oh and his peas look sh*te every before the rain came.

I think it's a great show, interesting to watch,Most of the young folks come across as decent hard working folk. Sure some of the situations may be different to here but alot is the same as farming anywhere -

The desire to make a go at it on their farms and take over the business, trying to find their own role and put their identity on the place, not wanting to be the generation that messes it all up.

I thought that , how come the other brother didn't feature in calculations .. He must have no son and have agreed to taking 50% of farm in monetary value .

Oldest son is a pri*k, standing out on the road with his dolly bird while his ole lad and 2 brothers are struggling , they had right to turn the rest of the heifers back in, then coming in bull headed with the jeep ... If he hit one of my heifers with the jeep like that, brother or no brother he'd have got a rattle in the puss!

I quiet enjoyed it,Thought it was up lifting,Especially the previous 2 wks,the son with the pigs and the school girl having the sheep, all trying to make ago of it themselves.Something different from ear to the ground and country file just another mix in the cocktail of farming programs of which there is so few.

Generally yes. Heard a geneticist on the radio. Talking about looks and money. Was really interesting. Basically better looking people than average earn more than ugly people on average. And the richer u are the better looking your wife will be on average. And then your kids will be better looking and richer. The caveat is plastic surgery. That screws the whole job up.
But from my travels in UK there are some serious totty and being a farmer was a bonus. As long as you had room for a horse they loved u

I dont know , two brothers and their father leaving two cattle in the field instead of having them all going together , then the third brother and his vet girlfriend making a drive at one of them and clipping her with the bumper - these were the boys running a 200 head of milkers .
The other 18 year old heading to the mart in a lexus buying strippers while the parents bet off on hols in the merc ....
I go back and over to wales the odd time visiting the wifes family and meet a few farmers in the pub ,Ive never seen any of these glamorous types though
