3rd provisional Licence

    Thank this may have been asked before but I cant find it.
    I have applied for my test and my 2nd provisionl licence is up.

    I applied for the test as this was necessary to get my 3rd provisional. However, I'm just checking if I now get issued with a learner permit rather than another licence or are the more or less the same? the form I got at the local Garda station refers to learner permit only. I checked this with the Guard and he said the form is the same.

    Is this true?

    Sorry to jump into this thread but I'm applying for a second provisional next month. My first is expiring and I have never sat a test or even been insured to drive up until last December as I was abroad most of the time. Does this mean I will only be issued with a learner permit also? and for what duration?

    You will be issued with a 2nd Learner Permit valid for 2 years..

    I want to apply for my test however, my prov. Licence is out of date. It was my 2nd licence. I am driving 5 years. I applied for the test twice though had to cancel both - once for a funeral and the second time as a brake light was on on the dash & the instructor wouldn't take me out onto the road.

    Where does this leave me' now, with regard to a 3rd prov. licence so that I can sit the test? Any help appreciated.

    You can do both and in no paticular order. You can apply for your driving test even though your licence has expired. You would need to get a new one before lessons or the test. You can also apply for your third licence as you have had a test date.

    my second prov licence is up i applied for my test 2 yrs ago and he woulnt let me out as car was out of nct by 2 days can i get 3rd licence without appling 4 my test straight away?

    The only way you get your 3rd learner's permit is by having a letter stating you have applied for your test you get a 3rd learner's permit valid for a year you can cancel or do your test then. If you have done your test and failed you can get your third learner's permit which will be valid for two years.

    My 2nd provisional (pre-permit) licence ran out last September, and last month I applied for my driving test and then 3rd provisional. I did not get a permit, but an original 3rd provisional licence. I was told (by the RSA and issuers) this is because I got my 1st provisional before the permits came in. Further to this, I am exempt from the 12 EDT lesson/skill requirement.

    my licence ran out 4 years ago, iv had 3 provisionals already. can i apply for another or do i have to sit the test again? iv done a full licence test already and unfortunatly i failed.

    Hi I was told that needed to apply for the test to get a third provisional licence (permit), however I've booked driving test but the confirm email says it doesnt suffice as proof you have applied for the test? So what does suffice? Especially annoyed I've just paid the 85 Euros.

    I'm in the same boat, think u need an actual date confirmed. I'm heading into the motor tax office later anyway so I'll let you know what they say.

    Edit: you need the date but if you go in with the rest they'll stamp it so you don't need to queue again once you have the date.

    Not sure what they need the date for as it means nothing. You can cancel/postpone it twice, so your test application can end up with one of three dates.

    Yeah that used to be the case but the rsa brought the rule in recently that you need a date. Its why the letter/e mail now states that the letter alone will not suffice for third provisional.

    Is it possible to book the test, get the letter and not get a date? Can a test be cancelled before a date is offered?

    When I tried to book a date it wouldnt allow me, it just gave the option to allocate me one when it becomes available. The next day I got a letter confirming that my test was paid for/booked and I will receive a date shortly.

    Not sure about cancelling it.

    I was told that once my second provisional is out of date I have five years to renew it before I need to start the process again/get a permit.

    Am I able to book a test and get my 3rd provisional in the meantime before my test date?

    Or will there not be enough time for this and I have to just take a failed test before I can get the 3rd provisional?

    You need a test date before they can process the license. Once you get your test date you can apply for the license and ask them to fast track it for your test, they usually are quick enough if youve a test soon. Or if you feel the test date is too soon for you then you can change the date up to three times before you lose your fee.
