I didn't realise that Leinster were stuck forking out so much money in rent to play at the RDS. Wish there was something that could be done if not right away down then the road as it just seems like Leinster are pissing away a lot in rent with no end in sight and lets face it the RDS is not excatly a great stadium to put it mildly.
What is wrong with the RDS? It's an excellent stadium that is showing great rewards following the massive amount of work put on it.

I would assume as part of the RDS redevelopment and sale of naming rights that Leinster would be looking to renegotiate the rent.

I'm sure when a new deal is been renegotiated with the RDS that Leinster will be in a far superior negotiating position than when the current deal was made.
The Leinster 'brand' has flown up in recent years and, thankfully, negative stereotypes surrounding it have been cast aside.

RDS is one of my favourite stadiums around. It's picturesque, especially on sunny days, and has the best spaces around the stadium to enjoy a day out.... The only thing it needs is an anglesea redevelopment and then it'll be perfect imo.

Completely agree, from a fan POV, an Angelsea development with corporate boxes, a full length terrace, better bars, views and toilets would would make it brilliant.

Unlike some new stadiums, it's got great character. Only noticed the small fountain area behind the Nth Stand on Sat!

    Much of a muchness really.

On one hand Leinster have an escape clause after 10 year which is coming up in 2016 I think.

However on the other hand Leinster dont have many other feasible options. They can't move back to Donnybrook due to the number of season ticket holders being greater than Donnybrook's limited capacity and moving full time to Lansdowne Road wouldnt be any cheaper for them.

Hopefully they come so a meaningful arrangement. The RDS Arena and Leinster look made for eachother. We dont need it when they need it (Horsies and concerts) and they dont need it when we need it (September to May).

    Fair points.

Absolutely Leinster want the RDS and the RDS want Leinster.

I feel though now Leinster have stronger bargaining power. We are now in a position where we could fill perhaps the Aviva not only for one HCup and the Munster fixture but maybe another HCup group game (Depending on the draw of course) and another interpro against Ulster.
If the RDS want to keep at least 2 HCup games per season and each Ulster fixture they may need to make a few concessions.

I'm really just thinking aloud, I've no stats to back it but but it seems as though we could us Lansdowne Road for 1 or 2 more fixtures per season.

Even Isa talking about the picket fence and the hedge around the ground shows just what it means to have a spiritual home. The IRFU presumably make a decent chunk off the concerts in the Aviva that they wouldnt' be able to host if it was our home stadium anyway. Donnybrook plays a vital development role in terms of promotion of the schools game.

I'm gonna miss the little wooden/glass box that Schmidt sits in.

I hope they keep the hedges and the terraces, they are part of what makes it home.

RDS is great. Just replace the Anglesea stand with a new one with a cantilever roof and a terrace in front and you're in business.

The ERC picks the venue for home semi finals, it doesn't necessarily need to be neutral.

They have to be "nominally neutral" i.e. it can't be the team's home ground but it can be in the same vicinity or a secondary ground.

This may sound like a silly question but who actually owns the Royal Dublin Society? I know it was set up many moons ago as a philanthropic organisation but is it state-owned now?
It's a massive complex so somebody must own all those buildings. OPW?

Yeah I think it's a great spot. The Anglesea needs a bit of redeveloping but that's about it. A full length terrace would be great too. The area in behind the Angelsea is class. It's nice and open, loads of room for kids to have a run around and plenty of space to grab some food and a pint. On a decent day there's a really nice and relaxed atmosphere about the place.

Agreed, very few grounds rival the pre-match atmosphere at the RDS. Only one I can think to compare is Sandy Park, 'although I was very drunk at the time' ;)

It's a society, owned by its members. The society owns the entire complex. Nothing to do with the OPW.

The RDS should buy a load of big Oktoberfest type benches and put them out on the grass on match day. Would make for people to get in earlier and stay later having a few jars.

Nice thought, but there is some deal with the local residents about clearing the site within certain times of the games, which is probably fair enough, you dont want legless fellas trickling out and up Simmonscourt Road until all hours, although you get that from the Ballsbridge pubs anyway!

At €5.80 per plastic "pint", they'd want to either do proper German Steins or allow you to bring in a bag of cans.

You think we can get 10,000 leinster fans to become members for a year and propose and vote to sell the Arena to Leinster for a pittance.

They don't search bags on the way in. Just saying...

I totally will the next time. When I was there in December, I couldn't get over how many people had cans with them compared to 2 years previously.

I always bring my own wine. (Loike, totes.)

Leinster don't make anything out of the concessions in the RDS so it's not like you're doing them out of the few bob.

It's at the stage where they would genuinely make more money if the price of the pints were lower. Last week every second person you saw in the stands had their own bottles/cans. I was sitting beside a group of lads who had brought in a load of bottles of beer and one of them even had a small bottle of vodka!

If you ever hang around and watch as the north stands empty the amount of bottles and cans left behind is staggering! (well during the sunnier months anyway)

I've stopped buying pints there now altogether because of the price. And I know I'm not alone. I didn't bring any cans on Saturday (never got a chance to buy any) so I ended up not drinking until I got to the Horse Show afterwards. The RDS may be a great ground, but they can feck right off if they think I'm paying over the odds for a drink.

yeah we bring bags and bags of booze to the games. the queues alone are enough to put you off let alone the price

For me the Angelsea side needs to be knocked down and a new bigger more modern stand put in its place. Given the teams success I would think a capacity in the mid 20's would be about right.
Beyond that if the RDS is to be our long term home then the RDS owners and Leinster need to sit down and come up with a much more equitable share of the revenue generated so both sides can a fair profit and continue to develop and maintain the stadium.
