This stage has been altered due to landslides around Naples over the winter, and what promised to be a fascinating opener with added lumpiness is now basically a city crit. What do crits make? Crashes. Let’s hope not, it would be a shame to see the first stage marred by a pile-up. There are two different finishing circuits – firstly four laps of a 16km circuit that features a bit of a cobbled climb followed by eight circuits of 8km with fairly tight corners. The shorter laps may be difficult for the sprinter’s teams to control but they should eventually wear down the likely escapees for a bunch sprint.

Given that Meersman said his agreed target at Romandie was three stages we can take it that Cavendish was just rolling around for a bit of climbing training - so he should be favourite, and remember he lost the red jersey last year by only one point so he will be bursting for a good start. However, the OPQS train doesn’t look anywhere as committed to the Cavendish cause as it might be - Steegmans has all the experience in the world as lead-out but doesn’t seem to be quite the force of old, and Keisse and Trentin look happier stage hunting than leading out Cav. Cavendish should win, but expect Goss, Ferrari, Bouhanni, Degenkolb and Viviani to be thereabouts.

Bouhanni is looking stronger and smarter every time I see him...

    Great stuff Flandria!

I'm going for Cav to take the stage.

Fully expect at least one big name hit the deck tomorrow. Would hate to see Bouhanni have another bad one.

aye, first stages of a tour are always nervous, and more likely for crashes, which means this could be an exciting stage for all the wrong reasons, given its changed to crit? :(

Probably Cav, but plenty of mayhem possible.

I got an each way bet on Ferrari at 34-1 yesterday.

Programme has begun, on time this year!

Hands up who already knew that Sean uses Speedplay?

Ok not enjoying Quigley's commentary too much, but will give him a few more stages before I decide for sure...

I guess I should open that bottle of Chimay then, and wait for the first 'calculation'...:P

Declan Quigley, probably better known for commenting on motorsport rather than cycling, but he does know a fair bit about the sport.

Hope he settles into the job soon!

I have heard him commentating on Eurosport earlier in the year. I think he's good - certainly has a lot of knowledge!

He is doing a decent enough job, and I reckon Kelly is happy to carry a few bottles for him rather than spend three weeks with Carlton Kirby. Harmon is missed though...

Wish he'd speak a bit more clearly and decisively. Gets confused and mutters with Sean.

He's quite good. What's with the ' Nibbly ' though, or am I pronouncing Nibali wrong..

"Looks like Uran is stopping again"
No Sean, you're watching highlights from what you just watched 30 seconds ago -.- lol
Naples looks like a lovely city to visit, the bay surrounding it is amazing
    Only 25km now!

Lots of crashes and lots of punctures. I hope the sprint is safe. OPQS seem to lack the authority you would expect from them, I'm not sure they are 100% committed to the Cavendish cause...

Naples does look lovely, doesn't it.
RAI pronouncing Nibali quite like nibbly as well.

OPQS are all over the shop

That was brilliant from Cavendish - he won it in spite of his team

Cav dropped a few places in the last 500m or so, thought he was just giving up but nope, the missile was successfully launched :D

    LOL "is this live?"

Impressive finish. Enjoyed Quigley's coverage, though I thought the same as I did about Harmon, and all cricket commentators ever, which is that it's a tough job when there's nothing happening. If only everyone had the luxury of being as stoic as Kelly! Fair play to Quigley though, he did great, and only his first day on a grand tour too.

Naples city itself is ok ...its the bay particularly Sorrento, Capri and Vesuvius (& pompeii) that is beautiful

However the Amalfi coast is spectacular .....They are going that way on Monday....been on holidays a few times ....beautiful scenery ,food and not too expensive to get to (from London)

But expensive when you get there spent my honeymoon there - it would have been cheaper to go on a round the world trip. I stopped off in a pizza restaurant in Capri and bought a slice and a can of coke. It cost me 32 euro, they went through the bill with me after, I was even charged a sit down fee for the wife who stopped and had a quick fag while she was shopping

Although I did like Ischia where the trial time is, it was more reasonable there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,606 ✭✭✭MPFG

Yes ..you are right... Almafi and Capri are for the jetsetters but I stayed in a hotel just outside Sorrento ...on the coast in a fishing village ...very reasonable
Flights to Naples and train to Sorrento is also reasonable...
(Visited capri, positano and amalfi but only had a beer or cofee)

You see where you went wrong there was ...wife ...shopping..Capri....that statement in itself makes me wince ....
