Will the civilised world be dragged down by Religions?

After watching hours of extremist videos by numerous people of varying religious beliefs i really am starting to despair for the future of this planet and can see a situation where Europe and other developed regions could be pulled down and rights eroded as certain religious agendas are pushed forward.

I cannot understand the level of hate for freedom and the interfering nature of some of the followers.

Only last weekend was i somewhat surprised when i encountered a preacher from what i would consider a somewhat soft and native faith who was intent on pushing extreme views and criticisms based on his religion who became frustrated when ignored.

This is not to debate if religion is good or bad but whether it's continued growth will eventually wipe us all out.

Looking at London today, religion can't drag us much further.

I'm confused. You experienced a pushy preacher and you think it's a sign of the apocalypse?

Why would religion "wipe us all out"? Can you be more specific?

Would civilisation exist in its current form were it not for religion? Its just history/reality folks.

    Religion is organised spirituality.

    Nothing else.

Tribalism might bring us down alright. That can come in the form of religious extremism, or racism, or class war, or political violence.

Will civilisation be dragged down by human greed, excess and intolerance?

Well while most if not all religions can be dangerous when looked at by the wrong people i must point to islam in particular where there is a ever increasing encroachment into western society.
This in itself is not an issue now, however with time certain pressures in regard to government and cultural change will occur, As much of our way of life is against sharia law.

World War 1, World War 2, and the countless millions who died because of communism (Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, etc.) - all nothing to do with religion and all happened within the last 100 years.

In answer to the OPs question, yes, when I think of the things that could hold mankind down or destroy us altogether, religion is #1 on that list.

Obviously Islam is the one with the most backward people and fruitcakes in it, that is frighteningly also the worlds fastest growing religion, but Christianity in parts is becoming more polarising especially in the U.S, with the Texas school board trying to airbrush some of the USAs founding fathers out history for having the "wrong" views (separation of church and state same thing going on in Turkey with regard to Kemal Ataturk). I also fear that Europe will gradually become Eurabia.

BTW World War Two had a lot to do with religion, at least it did if you were Jewish, and the "there is no god" form of Atheism is IMO also a religion which is why some of the worlds greatest genocidal murderers, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung etc were atheists, just as bad as Hitler and Himmler who IIRC were both Catholics (which itself is no great surprise considering how the RCC treated Jews throughout history).

Is it growing though? I would have thought that it was on the down? Maybe I'm wrong...but hopefully not.

There is no way religion could collapse the Western World. It would have done it already. I think Religion is terminally on the decline in Europe and what we are seeing is just more vocal extreme minorities. Likewise in the states, the image of the USA about to fall to the hard right religious types is has grown common thanks to them pushing their message hard and being able to be very vocal in modern times on the internet etc. The fact is it's always been there.

The only place i pity in the world with regards to religion is the Middle East. I can see the day when the oil is no longer needed or as heavily relied on due to advancements in alternative energies and they will all end up like Afghanistan. Just bombed out nations settling sectarian scores, getting technological crumbs from the rest of the world. If they abandon the secular education system's many of them have, they won't have the science based education system to keep up. Teaching the Koran as the main subject is great if you are in the 1400's, not so good for developing modern tech industries.

Also the Chinese are the biggest power emerging and they are about as restrictive on religion as you could be (though looking at it another way, communism is possibly their state religion). India is another up and comer that isn't hellbent on evangelizing the world. The big powers usually set the trends for everybody to keep up with.

My fear is that where once our countries were dragged down by Christianity, in Europe at least it looks like a far crazier religion is on the rise.

The damage it could do would be so grave as to make Ireland in the 1950s look like a secularists paradise by comparison.

Islam is growing at a rapid rate but from a low base level.
Christianity is growing at a slower rate but is making headway in 3rd world countries.
As a previous poster mentioned it is of concern the way the USA is trending.
