Looking for a good guitar case

    Hey everyone!
I have a Telecaster that I'm bringing with me over to Australia, but since the guitar has never outside of my house I don't have a case for it. Could you recommend a very durable case for me? Cheers!

A Hiscox is the only case I would use. They take a 500KG to crush, remember to loosen up the strings and don't lock the case as security/customs will pop it open but maybe put a belt or strap around it to stop it from opening accidentally.

I find Hiscox cases incredibly ugly visually. I´m sure the functionality is great. I like G&G cases but they´re quite expensive.

I know a guy who showed me his new Hiscox by standing on it. Didn't even bend. Super quality. Something like proper flight case might be in order? Aluminium edges and corners?
I'd be inclined to just buy a cheap tele over there. Why risk one you love? The climate mightn't suit it.

I was in a guitar store a few years ago and the sales dude stood on the case to try and sell it to me, naturally I asked him would he do that with a guitar in it, he said of course so I took a rather expensive guitar off the wall and put it in the case, he got on it, rather gingerly.

Took the guitar out and there was a crack at the nut up at the first fret....I laughed and he....well he didn't

    Was it a Hiscox?

It was as far as I can remember but I could be mistaken, however, I'm not knocking the cases, they're ugly but strong.
The lesson to be learned is don't stand on a case with a guitar in it no matter how good it is just on the off chance of this happening.

Never would have happened with a Steinberger.

Between their guitars and Hiscox cases they'd have the able-to-withstand-human-bodyweight market cornered.

This may seem blindingly obvious, but why not just unbolt the neck and pack the tele in a suitcase? Reattach and set her up when you get there. She'll need a setup anyway once she's acclimatised.

It was Leo Fender's intention that the neck be easily removable. Most people are terrified they'll ruin their guitar but flying it to Australia where the climate might be very hot and dry (depends where and when) means that a couple of weeks to acclimatise off the guitar might be good for the neck.

So you're saying I shouldn't stand on that Gibson case I have in the corner? Or that I should?...........

Oh, reread your op. the above is what I'd do for the flight. I'd second all the advice re hiscox, but I'd wait till I got to oz to pick it up. They retail for slightly more over there, but it would be one less thing to carry on the outbound flight. And one less piece of excess baggage to pay for...

    Nnnnnooooooo!!!!!

Acclimatise on the guitar! Or you may find a neck that doesn't quite fit the way it should! Depending on the woods used.

    That's a bit far-fetched.

Possibly, but it has happened. Woods expend and contract at different rates, depending on density etc. If you're going to allow an instrument adjust to a radically different climate in terms of humidity and temperature, why not do it properly?

I never actually thought of taking off the neck and putting it in the suitcase! At this stage I'm considering selling and buying a cheaper one over there, just for simplicity's sake, although it does have a certain amount of sentimental value.

Thanks for the input lads. :)

There's a fabulous second hand market over there. I used to pass a music shop walking from Randwick to Coogee Beach in Sydney every day that seemed to stock nothing but vintage Les Pauls. Enjoy browsing.

With extreme changes in humidity and temp. a tightly fitted neck joint can crack the body or cause it to twist. You wouldn't do it as a manner of course, but it's not unheard of to remove a neck and let it "settle". If you find a neck won't fit back into place, then imagine what it would've done in situ.

Give it to a mate to look after. It'll be here when you get back. I couldn't sell a guitar I like.

That would be true flying from Australia to here. That guitar is going to dry.

Not necessarily. Melbourne has similar rainfall figures to Dublin, but higher temperatures (considerably higher much of the time). This means higher humidity as more moisture is suspended in the warm air.

I would but I'm not coming back, heading over permanently, otherwise I would just get someone to mind it.

Ah! In that case I'd be inclined to put it in a suitcase in two parts, wrap it up well and reassemble or bring it somewhere to reassemble and setup over there. Pick up a case when you get there.
Good luck over there.(by the way, everything is poisonous.)

Yep, good luck OP. Watch out for the spiders, snakes etc etc etc.

100% sure my guitar won't matter because once I step off the plane I'm going to be bitten by something dreadfully poisonous.

I'll get it sorted anyway, just in case.

You will indeed. As soon as you see some of the 2nd hand and vintage shops you'll be bitten by GAS. Bring cash. Leave common sense at the door!
