Iv'e been looking for a MK5 Gti for the past year now and having no luck. Maybe I'm being too picky but here is what I'm looking for:

    -Must be 5 Door
    -Leather Seats
    -18 Inch Alloys
    -Climate Control
-Mileage must be no bigger than 70,000 miles max
    -Sunroof
-Colour: Black - open to other colours

I've even had a look up North as well and no joy. I'm looking to spend 15k or around that. So my question is can someone recommend an alternative car for me to buy? Or does anyone know of a GTI for sale??

    Thanks

Milage will be the hardest criteria to meet tbh.

15k will get you a lot more car than a 2 generations old hot hatch.

If I was buying a 5'r gti I would head out with 9 max as even in the last year prices on the have gone down a lot.

    15k is 335i money

Climate and sunroof usually are not spec'd together as they are so similar, usually one or the other unless the buyer is ticking every option, between them they cost over 2k

I'm just curious to know how the OP arrived at the cut off point of "not more than 70k miles"? Cars don't explode at say 80k or 90k miles.

    But timing belts do.

    But timing belts do.

Plenty of things can go wrong at 10k, 20k, 30k. Doesn't mean you don't buy the car. The Irish mentality of mileage still amazes me!

One would wxpect the owner of a gti to have changed the TB at around the 50k mark. I know I would. I would t wait for the standard 60k.

Buying a car at 70k could mean its very close to needing a TB change again or still on its original!

No, they don't, from my experience with VAG (getting fairly extensive now) timing belts simply do not explode on these cars regardless, that said if you stick to the replacement intervals I doubt you'll ever have a problem no matter what the mileage.

Gti timing belt per vw is 160k

A timing belt is a wear and tear item which needs to be changed at a set time or mileage interval, whichever is reached first. Going by this logic people better not buy any used cars for the fear they may need a new battery or set of tyres soon.

Personally, I think putting such a restriction on buying a used car is daft.

Wow, that's pretty mega mileage for a belt, Alfa really should pay attention lol, every 4 years also from what I've heard.

My reason for 70k miles is simple. The lower the mileage the less wear and tear on the car especially on the leather seats. Also I want a car that has had the big service at 60k so that Im not forking out extra myself!

There is a flaw in your logic though. That is assuming all things being equal that everyone treated their car the same way which unfortunately is not the case. Some owners are very hard on their cars even though they don't drive them far while others treat them like their baby. So a car with 50k miles could have had a much harder life that an a car with 80k miles. This is why people need to judge each car on its condition and service history rather than what a number says on the odometer.

Also I'm not sure what you mean by "big service", cars need regular maintenance through out their entire life at different intervals as they have a lot of wear and tear components that have different life expectancies. Just because a car had a lot of these replaced prior to you buying doesn't mean they will not need replacing again under your ownership. The GTi is not an expensive car to properly maintain but it won't be run on a shoe string budget either.

What's involved in this big service at 60k?

No way in hell I'd wok off that service plan.

It'll shine up any kind of exhaust, for a diesel clean the pipe down with a bit of kero first to remove the sticky stuff.

'08 leave you in the higher tax bracket compared to an '07. Thats why I went for an '07.

Xenons are a must on these cars. Such a difference compared to the standard lights.

Only if done right otherwise you'll look like a total plonker and be hated by everyone.

Factory Xenon's I meant, not the HID kits fitted in the standard lamp. I really dont like them. Topic for another thread though.

For the dsg there is only a tenner between new and old tax systems

I thought the gti car was a none petrol car.

Congrats. Does the GTI suffer from the same understeer as the regular Golf?

OP I have the car you want, except no sunroof and it's red and an '07.

I don't want to sell it though as it's sweet.:) Although if you offered 15k I'd have to think about it!

I think a white 3 door GTI looks well. I wouldn't be too bothered about DSG or manual, and definately wouldn't want leather seats.

I know I wouldnt buy a modern GTI without DSG. I love the comfort of it and how well it works.
