    Hallo folks,

An old friend of mine suffers from lactose intolerance and also has celiac disease, he cant get out much as he is getting on a bit so I do a little shopping for him,

I used to pick up a few packs of gluten free sweets from lidl’s for him and he really enjoyed them but now I see they only stock the sour gluten free packs… He cant stand these and keeps asking if I have come across the ones I used to get for him,

The poor chap hasn’t got much comforts in life so I do my best for him, I was wondering if maybe any one here might be able to tell me another store where I might pick up a few packs of gluten free goodies to cheer him up,

If you seen the way this guy rips open the packs I used to get him you yourself would supply him just to see the joy on his face as he tucks in… he’s like someone that hasn’t eaten in a week so any help with this would be gratefully received by me and most definitely by him.

    Cheers

Where are you based? Try your local health food store, they will generally have gluten free cookies, biscuits, flapjacks and so on. Actual sweets like jellies, I'm not sure, but it's definitely worth a look.

Coconut Macaroons, there's a gluten-free variant in most health food stores, I buy them in tesco.

PS. Are Snickers gluten free? I hope so :).

    Hi Guys,

My mam is coeliac aswell & I'm always looking around for goodies.

I pick up a lot of buts & pieces in Aldi, there very good with labelling. There do a box of chocolate covered nuts & some nice deserts. This time of year there is also a few manufacturers that do mallow kind of eggs I picked up a box in Aldi at the weekend but not sure of the brand.

If by sweets you mean jellies & hard sweets that's something my mam isn't huge on so I dont have much advise on that one. Tesco do a good selection of glutten free foods aswell so if your in a store have a look.

Oh & thorntons chocolates are also good with labelling, they have a store in Blanchardstown & The Jervis centre ( not sure if your in Dublin ).

Sorry for the long post, hope this is of some help to you :)

Snickers is gluten-free, Mars is not.

Most dark chocolate is dairy and gluten-free. Fry's chocolate cream is gluten and dairy free.

If you're near Dublin, this is probably the ideal spot:

The Coeliac Society of Ireland have a food list.
    http://www.coeliac.ie/gf_living/choosing_food/food_list

There's a lot of sweets in there!

It's a printed paperback so you can have it in the shops with you, and it's free to members - you do need to pay a membership fee of €25 per year, and it is updated online as items change.

Status can change because they might move manufacture of a line to a different factory which also handles wheat or barley for example, so it can state "Snickers bar with Best Before date earlier than 17th October 2012". Bad example for someone who's lactose intolerant too, but you get the point!

If your friend is registered as coeliac, he may be entitled to some relief on the added costs of gluten free food, though that's easiest if they're bought in a pharmacy where they can already be more expensive. If you've a Tesco card, I think they can print out a statement of gluten free products you have purchased. You'd have to ask in advance about that one, and I'm not certain it works in Ireland.

Good luck finding good sweets :-)

Eileen G - according to the Coeliac Society Snickers is no longer gluten free since mid 2010, same with Crunchie and Bounty :(

Re sweets - Rowntrees Randoms are on the GF list for 2011, not sure re this year as I haven't got the updated list

Interesting. I was just on holidays with three coeliacs, who were horsing into the Snickers, on the grounds that it was one of the few bars that were gluten free.

There is now a notice on the wrapper that it may contain milk and gluten..I didn't notice and ended up being really poorly after enjoying my favorite chocolate! Not on my menu any more:(

Most dark chocolate is NOT gluten and dairy free..unless it is made in a factory or on a machine that does not make cereal containing bars or milk chocolate..I know this from 30 years experience..keep checking ingredients, Aldi dark choc USED to be gluten free but is not any longer, Lidl's still is..for now! Its a minefield!

Oh no:eek: 'I've just had 2 bounties from a funsize pack. There's no mention of a chance of gluten. At least I'll know what causes me feeling rough in the next few days. It was an impulse buy as I'm always so careful and I wanted a treat.I can't have nuts either.

That notice is there because there's a possibility of cross contamination from something else they make. There's no gluten in any of the ingredients used to make snickers.

Supervalu is your best bet, they have a fairly good selection of gluten and milk free biscuits, cakes etc. Its tricky finding something gluten and dairy free but they have a pretty good selection.
