    Hi,

can someone help with this, I'm new to subscription-free TV, so finding it difficult to find an answer in the thousands of posts here... am a bit hazy on all the lingo.

I want a single box, that will give me a single 7-day EPG, with both Saorview and Freesat channels combined in the one listing.

I understand to get a 7-day EPG for Freesat, the box needs to be licensed. Is there such a thing, that will also list (in 7-day EPG) Saorview channels?

I dont want to have to switch TV input sources to select between two boxes, or to have to select between two different EPGs.

I dont mind if its a separate box, or if its a new TV with support built in.

    Also, with PVR functionality.

Is there anything? Most suggestions I see are to have two boxes, two EPGs etc.

    Thanks.

In a word, no. You are looking for the "Holy Grail" of satellite/terrestrial boxes and unfortunately one doesn't currently exist. It can be done in a roundabout way, using a Linux box and some computer software, but you need to know what you are doing and I have asked before if its possible to buy one of these type boxes, ready to plug and play, but no one seems to be offering such a service either.

There are enigma 2 plugins for satelite boxes which will allow you to download 7 days or more of EPG data for 28.2E. To the best of my knowledge any DVB-T box should automatically grab 7 days of EPG easily from Saorview you just need to find an enigma 2 box that is capable of both recieving DVB-T and DVB-S(2).

(There are several boxes capable of receiving both signals).

Thanks. Ok, is there a link to such software? Or a name to point me in the right direction? Im happy enough using linux, its the TV side of it I have no experience in.

Also, when you say linux, do you mean the self-contained tuner/recorder boxes I see, many of which seem to run linux, but running some custom/non-manufacturer firmware? or do you mean an whole home built pc?

But to those of us who are interested, but not experts, where do we find these Enigma 2 combo boxes, with the appropriate plugin and is it that simple ? Get the box, attach the plugin, attach sat cables and Saorview cables, plug in to the mains and away you go, 7day Epg for both satellite and Saorview in one box ?

Depending on the box it can be quite simple, usually its just plug in all the cables then getting the EPG for the satellite is a little more complicated. Some boxes have built in plugin systems which is literally hitting a few buttons on your remote. Some other boxes will require you to ftp over a package and then install that package using telnet (still not overly complicated if you've used linux before).

The plugin I use on my E2 (Enigma 2 boxes) is CrossEPG and use the OpenTV source, the source code of which is here: https://code.google.com/p/crossepg/

Several binaries of this can be found all over the net.

In terms of what boxes you can get, if the box supports DVB-S2 (HD Tuner) its HIGHLY likely that it is Enigma2, you can find all kinds of boxes just by googling:

    dvb-t dvb-s2

One of which is this box: http://www.eiretv.ie/amiko-alien-2-triple-2x-dvb-s2-1x-dvb-t-combo-receiver.html

But in terms of what you want to pay, you pay for what you get, some boxes like dreamboxes and vu duos are top of the range boxes which will do whatever you want.

Your best off posting a box you've been looking at and some people might be able to give you some more info.

The OP can't be arsed to press the input button on his TV remote, so how is a Linux receiver going to be of any benefit to him?

The OP has no problem with an input button, and is handy enough with Linux. Its the OPs partner that gets frustrated with input buttons. Hence this thread...

    From the OP

"I dont want to have to switch TV input sources to select between two boxes, or to have to select between two different EPGs."

Come on? Why derail the thread with arguments over me saying "I don't want" when "I personally don't mind, but others using it hate the complication" would have been clearer but ultimately unnecessarily detailed.

Probably the closest to your requirements is the walker combi , with updated software giving 'satfree' using freesat EPG data
It does require the use of the option button to switch from terrestrial though.
It's a step in the right direction though and hopefully we will soon see integrated epg.

For what it is worth, before I got the Alien box I would have described our household as you describe yours.

Now my wife is very happy using it.
Note you do not need the Crossepg plugin to get the 7day epg for the "Freesat" channels on enigma2 (HDMU and AR-P images anyway)

Cool. Thanks everyone. Will have Google these plugins, see what's available, what they can do...
