Dream Theater have announced that they will release their brand new, self-titled album through Roadrunner Records on September 24th.

This will be their second record to feature drummer Mike Mangini, who replaced founding member, Mike Portnoy in 2011 and debuted with the band on their previous album, "A Dramatic Turn Of Events."

    John Petrucci stated:

"This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can’t wait for everyone to hear it."

Dream Theater will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180 Gram Vinyl Double LP, and a Limited Edition Box Set.

Sadly can't really get very excited about this. Since Train of Thought I feel DT have become more and more mediocre with each album. Hope to be proven wrong.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

After Portnoy left I thought that it was exactly what DT needed to shake things up a bit but alas A Dramatic Turn of Events was lacking most of all in the drum department and it only highlighted Portnoy's large influence on the production side of things especially.

I hope Mangini will have more input on this album and the drums are as prominent in the mix as Pornoy's were as the guy is an excellent musician. ADTOE was still a decent album with some magnificent musicianship and arrangements but it just wasn't comparable to earlier releases.

I still have high hopes for the new album though and look forward to hearing the new tracks.

I think Petrucci wrote all the drum parts for the last album, is that true?

Apparently the drums were all programmed before Mangini was hired but hopefully he'll have full creative control over the drums on the new album.

It'll be an interesting album, now that Mike Mangini has been fully integrated into Dream Theater writing process, and please don't attack me when i say, i think it actually did a lot of good for Dream Theater when Mike Portnoy jumped ship

This. I absolutely love DT's earlier work, and I was really hoping that Mike Portnoy's departure would result in a more interesting direction on their latest album. In the end I found it to be quite forgettable. I wasn't mad on some of the stuff Portnoy was writing on the last few albums, but he was all for the fans/live shows, so in the end I do feel it was a bit of a loss.

I'll still try to be open minded for the new album though

Interesting tracklisting with two suites. Even more excited about Mangini's contribution to the songwriting process.
In January, Petrucci said of Mangini’s work, “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

To confirm for whoever asked - the drums for A Dramatic Turn of Events were programmed by the rest of the band, so Mangini had no creative input. This album he's appearing as a fully integrated contributor. Damn, that cover and tracklist have me very excited :)

I'll definitely check this out, I'm interested to see what they can conjure up next. I'd agree that Train of Thought was the last Dream Theater album that really impressed me, but I'm hopeful that these guys have another great album in them. We'll see anyway.

A Dramatic Turn of Events was okay but I thought Black Clouds & Silver Linings was an amazing album, so I'm not too worried. I expect it'll be pretty good.

We're a long way away from the Metropolis Pt 2 days though.

Yeah I do put that album on every now and again, 'A Nightmare To Remember' is great.

Hmmm, wonder could I make this gig? Normally go to see them on every tour, but I'll have a 3 month old & a 2.5 year old. I'd really need to sweet talk my brother in London to mind 2 kids or else bring someone with me.

Yeah, as much as I kinda give out about DT's later stuff, I listened to Black Clouds loads when it came out. It's a decent album, despite the terrible, terrible lyrics (Count of Tuscany I'm looking at you!) :P

Dream Theater has released a third in-studio clip from the recording process of the band's upcoming self-titled album.

In this one, John Petrucci takes the time to go over many of the songs on the band's forthcoming record in detail.

On first listen, the song sounds very much like a continuation of the style heard on A Dramatic Turn of Events. The drums don't have that Portnoy bite that was lacking on the previous album and that I was sure would be rectified on this album. Rudess' obligatory keyboard solo added absolutely nothing to the song. I'll give it a few more listens anyway.

    It's not bad, fairly enjoyable.

    Agree with this all right.

It's not a bad song. I like the catchy chorus. I'll reserve judgement till I hear the full album... But I can't help myself feeling that I won't find it particularly memorable. I do think the chorus has a really good hook though

I quite like that new track. LaBrie is getting a little more bearable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Dark Artist

Have to say I'm really liking this new song. It doesn't have the bore factor that a lot of songs on the last album had for me. It's the first of their singles that I've actually liked in years. I'm hearing a lot of what's been done before by them but in general I think it's fairly savage, and I agree about LaBrie. He sounds good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,152 ✭✭✭Passenger

    Official Lyric Video.

Have to say, I'm certainly warming to this song now that I've had a few days with it. The drums appear to be a little prominent in the mix compared to ADTOE. Fair enough, on ADTOE they were programmed by Petrucci and they've certainly improved but probably not as much as I would have hoped. Though only hearing the full album will show how good Mangini's sound actually is. Anyway, it's a decent start by DT.

John Petrucci Says Between the Buried and Me, Periphery and Animals as Leaders “Influenced and Shaped” the New Dream Theater Album.
“…I think that without naming a specific band, there is a whole wave of younger bands that are in the prog vein. There is Periphery, Between the Buried and Me, Animals As Leaders — bands like that are doing stuff where you hear it and you are like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing! That was intense!’ You can’t help but have that seep into your subconscious, you know? In that sense, anything you hear that you like the sound of becomes an influence and shapes who you are as a musician writing music.”

Whether he's just arbitrarily name-dropping 'cool' younger bands or if he's just genuinely influenced or inspired by them, it's still interesting to hear that a veteran musician of Petrucci's caliber has his ear to the ground regards the modern Metal scene.

Dream Theater: Live At Luna Park Coming To Theaters
SpectiCast and Eagle Rock Entertainment are once again collaborating to distribute the "Dream Theater: Live at Luna Park" concert film to theaters worldwide beginning Thursday, September 19th, 2013.

This cinematic event was captured over two nights during the final leg of the band’s 15-month "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" world tour, which hit 35 countries. "Dream Theater: Live At Luna Park" was filmed in Buenos Aires, runs for 160 minutes, and features many of Dream Theater’s classic tracks, including “Metropolis Pt. 1,” “The Silent Man,” “Pull Me Under,” “The Root Of All Evil,” “The Test That Stumped Them All,” “The Spirit Carries On,” and the recent track “On The Backs Of Angels.”

“Dream Theater: Live At Luna Park is a fantastic addition to our Rock In Cinema series,” said Mark Rupp, Co-Founder and President of SpectiCast. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Eagle Rock Entertainment, bringing theatrical releases of concerts by some of the world’s best musical groups to theatres around the globe.”

Dream Theater's self-titled album is also due out September 24th, 2013.

Wonder would Ireland get a showing of this?!

New track "Along for the Ride" from the forthcoming album. That keyboard solo is a little grating. See what you think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Somnus

I like the keyboard solo. It's the only interesting part of the song for me. Reminds me of Ayreon a little (Wonder if that has anything to do with Jordan on the new album).

I find the rest of the song fairly unexciting again. I think I've given up all hope on this album :P

Aye, good call on the Ayreon similarity. What did you think of 'The Enemy Inside'? Thought it was a decent taster for the album but this track is more album filler then anything else, though maybe it'll fit into the album as a whole when we hear the entire thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Somnus

I thought Enemy Inside had a catchy chorus. It's not bad if you catch my meaning, but I guess I just much prefer their older stuff. Even up to Octavarium. It was after that I felt the songs started getting a bit boring in parts and just overall not very appealing to me personally.

The band have produced a lot of albums, there's only so long they can go and still write interesting material. I had hoped that Portnoy's departure would spice things up, but I'm not a particular fan of Mangini (I think the likes of Minnemann would have maybe tried to direct them into something more interesting) and I don't think they've gotten better.

DToE was serviceable but forgettable and I feel this album will be too. Obviously nostalgia plays a part and it could just be I'm looking back on the pre Systematic Chaos stuff more favourably as a result, but they just don't do it for me anymore.

Edit: That turned into a bit of a rant actually :P

Images & Words and Awake are the two must have albums with honourable mention to Scenes from a Memory.

Plenty of other top quality albums but those are the ones to have for somebody just getting into them. :)

You'll probably get a list of 3: Images and Words is kinda like their classic album, with a few extremely great signature songs.

Metropolis part 2 is their ultimate concept album and it is absolutely a masterpiece. Really deserves all the acclaim it gets.

But my personal favourite is Awake. It just has this great atmosphere to it that I love. If you're more in modern rock and metal I'd go for Metropolis part 2. If you like older stuff then Images and Words.

Just go for them all ;-)

    Sorry for derailing thread.

I had a cassette of one of their live albums with the burning heart on it. That was good and always liked the killing hand (song) but believe it was a different singer?

That was Charlie Dominici who was the vocalist on their first album. James LaBrie replaced him on their second album. ;)

New album being streamed on the prog magazine site from 3pm today!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Dark Artist

Listened to the new album twice now from the stream and I have to say I pretty much hate all of it except for the first and last songs which I like quite a lot. Nothing grabbed me and there's not much in there to suggest it'll be a grower. Fair play to them for exploring the other end of the spectrum as opposed to trying to be heavier/more intense, but I can't listen to that much of LaBrie, and I just find most of the songs boring, same old ****, even down to the random circusy bits, and they sound even more out of place on this album! I'm disappointed but most people seem to be going apesh*t about it so... highly recommended :pac:

Tried to play the album the other day and the stream was geoblocked. Anyone get that?

Listened to it in full twice today, and found it a very dull affair save for a track or two.

Just finishing my second run through. I find it to be more instant than ADTOE. More symphonic too! Impressed. Can hear a few "Rushisms" in there too \m/

That album with the burning heart is Live at the Marquee. It is James LaBrie singing on it I'm sure. The Killing Hand is their best song imo. First time I heard it I hated the ending. But it's grown on me over the years, to the point where I think it's great!

I've only listened to the 1st song off the new album. It's ok. Not fantastic. Just ok. I must listen to all of it over the next day or two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,152 ✭✭✭Passenger

Giving this a proper listen now. Parts of it remind me of Rush other parts conjure up their heavier Train of Thought era stuff and there are keyboard-led symphonic arrangements that evoke some old school 70's Prog Rock. And it all fits together.
