Well deserved! At least we wont see Queally anymore on the Lady Cecil trained ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

And Buick too (i think he's the most over-rated jock out there) imho.

Will Doyle be riding the Cecil horses as well? Don't think Queally is brilliant, but he's hardly as insufficient as some people make out.

TQ is fine by my reckoning. I have never been put me off backing a horse he's riding. Think he's below the top table of flat jockeys, but that goes for the bulk of them. Wouldnt' class him as a poor jockey at all, but thats just my opinion.

Big step up for JD. He'll be in the limelight now, under ramped up scrutiny & best of luck to him.

That's a bit harsh. I'm certain Lady Cecil is delighted with his support and performance since she took over the licence.
    PS
Gary O'Brien reports that Aga Khan will not have a retained jockey in ireland next season ; tough on DMcD

The Aga Khan is going to have horses in training with Weld next season along with Oxx and Halford.

In an era of very poor jockeys (one where you can have the likes of Hughes and hanagan as champions) one man stands head and shoulders above the rest for me and that's Mr De Sousa. Don't see what difference Doyle will make, no better or worse than Queally, as for Mcdonagh where did it all go wrong for him?

Oxx is on a shocker this season. What has he had maybe 10winners?

Can't believe people are slating William Buick and Richard Hughes in this thread.

Re. James Doyle. Nice gig to land and I wish him well.

Don't rate Hanagan that highly but Hughes is quality.

But I agree that there isn't a standout jockey coming through. De Sousa? Really?

Would he be anywhere near Fallon of 6 or 7 years ago? Or Murtagh?

De sousa is on the up. present day Murtagh is still better than most of what's riding now and I include hughes in that. Hughes threw his whip away twice in the last 3 weeks at the business end of races. Couple of stinkers at goodwood last week too. Vastly overrated.

Big fan of De Souza but he rode some shockers at glorious goodwood, picking up a few days off in the process. Hughes rode brilliantly at glorious goodwood but like De Souza. I guess they all have off days at the office.

Overall, not sure there's a whole lot between the two. Only way you might be able to judge is if they each got an even book of rides (both in number & quality ) at Group level for a season and see who had the higher strike rate. Doubt there would be a lot between them but this is kind of off topic.

Hughes can have some shockers in fairness but overall he is probably the best around. At the moment him and Murtagh are by far the best around imo.

    Ryan Moore is up there.

    Queally is adequate.

Conor King is the man now !
Any trainer with a fancied runner is dying to get him onboard their horses.

Oisin Murphy has impressed me, think he'll do very well.

Never liked any one called Oisin, they've always been ****

I find Richard Hughes irritating as a jockey. I don't like the way the strategy of winning races from behind has kind of become his thing. Sometimes it is blatantly the wrong thing to do, and has got him in trouble a few times, yet he persists with it. Frustrating.

Ryan Moore is very good - rarely makes mistakes. I can't really think of any major races where he was beaten when he should have won. Same with Murtagh. Contrast that with Joseph O'Brien - I genuinely believe he is limited as a jockey.

In my opinion one of the best jockeys in the last generation has been Frankie Dettori (strong/ tactically astute) - it's been sad to see him unravel so badly over the last few years. He'll come back if he wants to, but that remains to be seen. Age etc. not really so much on his side anymore.

Well he just rode the winner of the first at Southwell.

Jim Crowley is one who is vastly underrated.

Ryan Moore is very good I couldnt care less about his lack of 'personality' as long as hes getting winners.

Hughes is more than just a hold up jockey has won plenty of races from up the front.

Murtagh is still the man id love to have on my horse (if I had one!)

Doyle has the potential to be top class but he still is young and his best days ahead, gave Al Kazeem probably the ride of the season at Ascot and has Group 1 winners so makes perfect sense to move him up as retainer

Totally agree, huge fan. Just brought home a 33/1 shot in Salisbury.

I like Doyle as a jockey. Murtagh still sets the standard though.

Murtagh is still the best all round pilot around. Hughes and Moore are the best riding in England with Buick and Doyle best of the younger generation. Luke Morris, Adam Kirby and Paul Mulrennan would be three of the journeymen that I would rate quite highly but the day to day standard of riding on the flat in England is quite poor generally speaking.

I still get nightmares from Hughes' ride on Home Affairs in the Diomed at Epsom.

    +1 completely agree
But Luke Morris a journeyman.. He is 23/24?

Always feel I'm going to get the most for my money
    when murtagh is on board
He fooks up less than the rest imo

Hughes a little unpredictable despite being brilliant but
the man to be with at certain tracks

would like to see ronan whelan getting some more rides. A very talented young jockey.

I think o brien is far too tall and hence cant be as strong as other jockeys

Just remembered this thread, Ronan Whelan just rode out his claim.

And Oisin Murphy is a beast.
