Recently bought an iMac as I love photography and Mac was the way to go for me. I want to get Microsoft Office for my iMac but all the software I can find comes with a CD (Apple Store and Microsoft website). My iMac doesn't have a CD drive. I always thought that you could download software and purchase a product key. Can anyone offer some guidance or offer an alternative to office. Looking at the basic package, word, excel and powerpoint. Thanks

There's office 365 which is subscription based, what about downloading it directly from the Microsoft marketplace?

If you already have a disc, see here:

Or if you want to buy a digital copy, you should be able to do so here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/mac/buy

However, if it doesn't have to be Office, you should consider Apple's iWork package which can be purchased very cheaply from the App Store.

I've used Pages since 2007 and compared to MS Word for Mac it's a total doddle to use and zippier on the Mac as it's native to the OS. If you want to write up reports or anything the templates are great while it's great for dropping photos into reports.

Numbers is okay compared to Excel and does what you need it but Keynote, well if you use Powerpoint then you will love it. Incidentally, all 3 are now on a Beta for using via iCloud which will allow you to edit all three online using a Mac or PC; this may interest some users who still need to use a PC as well as a Mac and who want access to their documents.

Im in a similar position, just got a new macbook air for college I need a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software. I don't know iWork or the new office, but college uses office. Presentations, word documents etc will have to be used through office and must work seamlessly which makes me lean towards office....

What is the difference between office for mac and office 365? all i can see is that after 4 years ill be locked out of office 365?

In the end I bought office mac 2011 home and student for €139. Its a one time payment. It has word, powerpoint and excel. It's a bit expensive but I think it was worth it for me. I used office on a pc for 4 years in college so it's what I'm used to and now that I'm going back to college and working full time I don't want to have to learn something new. It really depends what you're looking for...

Hungry, I know you've already purchased but pages, keynote and numbers are now free with your iCloud account, bring them for a spin anyway you may prefer them.

how do I get them for free? the app store says that they're almost €20 each.

With an Office 365 subscription (the €80 student one) do I get to install them onto my device (i.e. use them offline) or are they run online only like google drive?

Only when you have an active internet connection dingle, like google docs they're web browser based, though with apple giving them away with new iPhone 5c/5S you'll probably see the same thing happen with Mavericks when it's released.

I have a MBA and I purchased office university for 80 euro. As I am in college and although I use pages keynote numbers and find them good there's certain things in college where it's just handier to have excel etc for. Anyway to answer your question when you download it you get word excel outlook PowerPoint 2011 edition. They all work offline normally. You just click on the icon and up word etc comes like on any laptop.

I'm happy with it and its good value at 80 euro the main downside is the fact it's only a four year licence. Still you can't really go wrong at that money.
