Hey guys, so my uncle has arrived in Ireland yesterday (another Pole to steal your jobs :D) and he is going to need a car, basically a cheap runabout that wouldn't be too hard to maintain by himself (he's a mechanic).

His budget is €2k. My recommendations were:
    - 2001 VW Passat 1.9 TDI
    - 2004 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI
    - 2001 BMW 318i
    - 2001 Audi A3 1.6

Is there anything better than this in this price tag?

No french stuff, he's very stereotypical - as in fixed a lot of french cars back home.

Finally something that's not for me :D

PS. Back in the old country he used to own a 2005 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Estate Automatic.

    On a more serious note

Also, will he be bringing it back? Lots of very cheap LHD cars here when the time comes.

About 50-70 miles a day to work.

That is awesome! Never seen a RHD one myself.
He's not planning on going back any time soon.

    He's not a fan of:
    - Honda Accord (2004)
    - Volkswagen Bora
    - BMW E39
    - Fiat
    - French
    - Waffles
    - Toilet Paper

I remember lots of them. And Lada's, FSO's and Skoda Rapidos. Actually I spotted a yellow one of them 10 days ago in Aberdeen.

    Diesel anyway so :)

I'd say the passat, get a comfortline one for peanuts at that age.

Rarely give trouble and are easily fixed by anyone should anything go :)

We have a lawnmower at home with a 730cc engine in it :)

That car has a ridiculously small engine, but dead cool to have :)

594cc must have been one from the 70's.

Make sure he brings NCB statements from his previous insurers, and have them translated into English. Then he needs to find insurer which will accept them.

Shyte auto and that looks rough

I honestly think that they come out of the factory with the dent in the wing :) It's on every one of them!
And BA is correct, doesn't have that looked after feel, maybe its the shortness of the ad or whatever.
You'll also get far cheaper ones!

    Yeahhhh.. it is.

After clicking 'Submit Reply' I realised it's hardly an econobox either. :pac:

Dents and mismatched front wing done it for me.

That was my first thought; a cheap run around is a 13 year old Micra or 1.25 Fiesta, not a bloody 318 BMW or a 2.0 Mondeo ffs :pac:

    He's 43 + full NCB :D 458e for a year's insurance on a TDI Passat at AXA.

Ar 50 to 70 miles a day a 2.0L diesel be much more economic than a micra that will drink petrol.

OP would an avensis be considered?

If cost is an issue then polos/yaris/fiestas of 10+ years old cant be beaten. Old diesel mondeo type cars are also goers but one has to accept an additional 1k a year in tax and tire , maintainance costs over the smaller petrol machines.

Yeah, econobox in Poland has a different meaning :D

    Tax until 2.0 is ok.
