3dsxl is the best of the range

3ds XL is the thing to get. Well worth the extra. Size screen is perfect and machine itself is very comfortable in hands.

Thanks all are the games downloaded or the old style cartarges.what games are a must buy.

Thanks all are the games downloaded or the old style cartarges.what games are a must buy.

You can buy physical copies of games or download from nintendo itself. Just to note: downloaded games save on the Machine it self and not on your account like steam.

There are plenty of good games on 3DS, it all depends on your taste. Just check them all.

I was messing around with the 2DS and I think its great. If you're budget constrained the 2DS is a great choice.

    Hi all,

Was thinking about getting one of these for the likes of Ace Attorney and Pokemon.

However just 1 or 2 quick questions if you could answer for me.

I'm in Korea atm, is the 3DS region locked for games, or should I be buying a US version and having it shipped over ?
Also with regards to games, does the 3DS play the DS games ?

Finally, what version should I go for ...3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Region lock : yes (3ds and DSi-enhanced, DS games are region free)
Play DS : yes, uses same slot for carts
Which : consensus is XL, but ds games don't look the best scaled up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,000 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

I'm unsure about the region locking, but they definitely do play DS games.

I'd go for the xl myself, but try them out and see which one you prefer.

Well considering it's region locked, i'll probably have to get one shipped over from the US to play the games then.
As I can't fully understand the language here yet

    hi guys,
looking for some help and advice. im thinking of treating myself to a 3ds for Christmas and was wondering which is best, the standard 3ds or xl? i would have thought the xl would be better put i heard that the resolution is poor compared to the standard 3ds? any advice would be great.
also i was looking at a couple of bundles online at it seems the ac adaptor is not included, is this the norm with 3ds whereby i have to fork out extra money just to charge my console?
    thanks in advance guys.

The XL is much better to look at than the standard 3DS.

(Merged your post with existing thread asking similar questions.)

Good for a 5 and 10 year old girl who only have the old DS do you think?

Could you recommend any titles deano7788? Other than the Mario's and zeldas what would be the best games available? Im not a pokemon fan so I can rule them out!

Just off the top of my head, Fire Emblem is an absolutely amazing game, so definitely that. I found Castlevania very enjoyable, although it's not a traditional Castlevania. Luigi's Mansion is excellent, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Professor Layton, Resident Evil Revelations. Monster Hunter 3 is enjoyable, but it's not for everyone. Kid Icarus is great but the controls can take a bit of getting used to. I know you mentioned Mario, but outside of the traditional games there are also Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, which are both very good rpgs, M&L especially.

There's also some really excellent downloadable games. Pullblox and Fallblox are probably my favourite. The new Ace Attorney game was released last week if you enjoy them as well. It's download only.

They're just what I could think of right now, I'm sure there's others I've missed.

Two kids - 5 and 3. 3 year old wants everything 5 year old has so I wanted to get them the same thing for Christmas.

Is this a good or bad idea? They can play iPad games but can't read yet (5?year old is learning obviously!)

    Can you recommend any games?

    Anything Mario related.

I'd be more tempted to go for the new Leap pad 2

If you're going for the DS for very young children, Nintendo have recently released a new version of their 3DS handheld, the 2DS

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Handheld-Console-2DS-Black/dp/B00E4LGJ3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383092856&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+2ds

Called so due to the removal of the option to display the upper screen in 3D to reduce production costs (all 3DS games will still play as normal on it) the design is intended for younger children by removing the hinged clamshell, the usual point of breakage for a dropped system, as well as keeping the cost down for customers on a budget or for younger kids who will be more likely to damage them.

As I said, the games are exactly the same as for the normal models, and of them, for the five year old at least, Super Mario Bros has been a solid choice for nearly thirty years, with easy controls and absolutely zero questionable content. The most recent entry for the 3DS is Super Mario 3D Land.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time or Pokemon X/Y might be a good choice for the older child, both also being series I grew up and had fun with, and again have no questionable content. However the former has some puzzle elements which will depend on the child, and the latter requires basic reading ability to understand what's going on.

As for the younger child, I'm not sure what I'd recommend. There are some games intended for post-toddler age children on the system but I'm not familiar with them.

Thanks - the reason I'm not going for that is we already have one, and I think by getting them the same there will be less fighting than getting them something different.

Pokemon has a LOT of reading in it.

Mario platform games are frustrating for younger gamers

Do not underestimate the awesomeness of Nintendogs for kids who can speak but do little else. My eldest has loved it since she was 3 (she doesn't have her own 3DS, but letting her play with her puppy when she's very good or upset can work wonders :) ) Also, each game supports 3 dogs/cats and so you can support up to 3 kids with one cart!

Luigi's Mansion 2 is a lot of fun too, but the ghosts will eventually spook the kids. You can get them into the first couple of levels though by joking them along... it might even be empowering, they know they can defeat ghosts with the hoover so they don't need to be afraid...

Animal Crossing is an excellent game for kids - there's reading but you don't need to do it. There're no fixed goals, but there are rewards for certain good behaviours. You can play online or local multiplayer but it only gets competitive if you want it to. The content only becomes questionable if you make it questionable (you can define other characters' catchphrases to be as filthy as you like, or dig enough holes in the ground to make an effigy of a rudimentary set of genitals visible from space, but that's not in the game by default!). Growing apples, watering flowers, fishing, diving, bug catching - it's the childhood you never had.

Freaky Forms is good fun - creative but easy for kids to create with. Gameplay is repetitive but kind of fun and endearing. You do occasionally get some very creatively filthy Forms from other players though.

The Mario Party game is a good game for the younger ones as it is all simple mini games.Hours of gameplay..Also the cooking mama range are basic. There are plenty of educational games like Dora,Diego Crayola etc.
My fella started playing at under 3 and he's 9 now and it hasn't done him any harm.He still prefers going out to play soccer, hurling etc so it didn't turn him into a gaming addict but instead got his brain working early solving simple puzzles etc..There are plenty of very reasonable pre used ds games in the shops now with the 3ds out..

I'm gonna get the better half one of these for Christmas; I've a few questions I hope ye can help with!

    - I take it the DS lite cartridges are the same and there's no issues with backwards compatibility?

    - She loves Bomberman for the original DS, is there anything in a similar vein to this available now?

    - Or can anyone suggest a similar style game?

    - Does anyone know who's doing the best deal on them at the moment? (bricks-and-mortar, not online!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭nitromaster

No issues with backwards compatibility (except for games that use the GBA slot, guitar hero/etc).

There's no 3DS version yet, but the original will work fine! There's a cut down (from the DS version) version called Bomberman Blitz available on the eShop. It's €5 and may be worth a look as it's handy to have on the system at all times in my opinion :) Review here: http://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/2009/11/bomberman_blitz_dsiware

I was looking at that, can't find a release date for BM Blast though which seems to be highly rated.

Is there any similar genre games available for the 3ds? I was thinking of just getting something like Luigi's Mansion or Animal Crossing for the 3d effects. (Is AC aimed at children or is for kids of all ages?!)

Animal Crossing is certainly not just for kids, though they should love it too!

Sorry if this has been asked before..
What is best DS console for a 7yo boy? Is DSi any good?
Also, he had a DS a couple of years ago but lost it (dont know what type but was not 3DS or DSi or DS lite!). He still has loads of DS games, will they still work on any new DS?
    Thanks

A sticky might be in order....

3DS / 3DS XL plays DS and DSi Enhanced and 3DS games. Has access to 3DS and DSi games on eShop (Nintendo's online store accessed from the console).3DS is region locked (European console plays European games, US plays US etc)
2DS is a 3DS without the 3D function or the hinge to close the screen. 3D function not necessary to play games (arguably the AR games are pointless without it though, and Resident Evil looks sooooo good in 3D...). Is otherwise functionally the same.
DSi / DSiXL plays DS and DSi Enhanced games. Has access to DSi games on eShop. DSi is region locked for DSi-Enhanced games, but DS games are region free.
DS Lite plays DS and GameBoy Advance games. No region lock. No eshop
DS Phat plays DS and GBA games, with the advantage that the GBA games fit all the way inside the body of the console! No region lock, no eshop.

Given the cost of a DSi versus a 2DS or 3DS, I'd get a 2DS/3DS - you get to play all the same DS/DSi games plus all the fab 3DS releases from the last couple of years, and all the stuff coming down the line for the 3/2DS in the future.

Edit : Argos have the Black 3DS XL + The last couple of Dr Puzzlecompendium and Temple of Doom* games for €210. Slightly cheaper from Argos in the UK if you can Parcel Motel it, but for the sake of 15-20 quid you might like the convenience of B&M collection / return.

*I can't remember his name - the guy with the hat! You know the one I mean. Professor Curious? Dr Inquisitive? I haven't played the games...

Hi, considering getting a 3DS XL atm with Pokemon X/Y and Fire Emblem Awakening.

Any suggestions for what to get other than the charger, and what colour?

Colour depends on your own personal taste. Personally I bought the limited edition Zelda 3ds xl which is gold and black and I love it.

As for what else to get, id highly recommend purchasing the official Nintendo starter pack. Cones with a great case, screen protector and few other little bits.

In America and had planned on getting a 3dsxl until i had the nagging feeling to check about region locking.

Surely I thought nobody region locks anymore but nope Nintendo still reocking it old school with their consumer hating, I suppose i shouldnt really be surprised but its still pretty ridiculous in 2014 for a handheld to be region locked no?

The most ridiculous thing is the DS and all earlier handhelds were region free. They only started region locking with the DSi.
