We have narrowed down our company replacement car to these two. Which one would you go for and why?

    Focus 1.4ddci 95bhp?

Is that really a Focus 1.6 TDCI 95bhp?

Not being funny but neither, 90bhp is not enough for modern (very heavy) cars.
    Imo of course.

Hmmm we currently have a new gen polo with a 1.6tdi engine and it's crap,no power at all. Hoping the one in the Golf might have a different setup. Before that we had a mk5 golf with the 1.9tdi 105bhp and it was a nice drive. What would you suggest?

if my choice was narrowed down to those two cars, I would get a test drive in both, and buy the one I preferred

The Golf is even heavier than the Polo, so it's going to be even more crap. Comparing a 90 bhp 1.6 to a 105 bhp 1.9 is not a fair comparison really, the 1.9 is obviously going to be quicker and therefore nicer. Why can't you get a 105 bhp Golf or a 115 bhp Focus? Both of those would be better alternatives to what you've listed so far.

    Hi OP,

    I have a Golf Mk 6 1.6tdi 90bhp.
Purchased new in 2011 and now have over 100,000kms on the clock.

I had a 1.9tdi 105bhp Passat before that and to be honest they are very comparable wrt power delivery.
I do not find much difference if any between them.
No issues yet after over 100k kms.
Plan to keep it for many more 000s kms.

Costs approx €75 to fill the tank with todays prices and I repeatedly get between 1100 and 1150 kms per tank which is very respectable.

    Mike.

That sounds pretty good. I think they put a special "send to Ireland this Monday 1.6 in the polo we have". She is worse of fuel than the Golf it replaced.

Price, repayments are a big issue for accounts. We had to downsize last time to get it across the line. So I'd say we will be stuck with low spec options. Could look at other makes, but thought these 2 were top of the pile, with the mk7 golf probably edging it?

Titanium spec. only, so it'll be a bit more expensive. 95bhp - 115bhp makes a huge difference in overtaking performance btw.

Consider the Octavia if price is an issue - Essentially a Golf but cheaper.

The New Corrolla is also an option - ive driven it and its certainly not a bad car to drive. Same power output as the Golf/Focus above but again should be cheaper per month.

Driving a 1.6 diesel Kia Ceed this week. Nice drive and is returning over 60mpg according to the trip computer. Lots of toys too which must be standard if their in a rental.

Had a Golf 1.6 as my last rental found it to be more solid but less nippy. Neither would be my choice of car though but are very smooth drives.

7 year warranty on the Kia's too.

We have a price for the Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30 as well as the Seat Leon. Believe it or not the cheapest two of that bunch were the Golf and Focus. Warranty not so much an issue as the cycle is 3 years and includes a maintenance contract.

I'd throw the Astra in, and as a curveball - the Citroen C4. Might be worth a lot less than the Golf in 3 years, but Citroen give a lot of support for fleets.

Not a bad motor to drive either. Same engine as the Focus.

Never driven the Citroen, is the model not getting a little old now?

Astra I have driven, not too bad at all.

One thing we would be thinking off is buying the car at the end of the lease, as we usually get the option. Our cars are always in good shape when we're finished with them. So to that end I guess the Kia could look a good bet, as it would still have 4 years warranty left, are pretty reliable anyway and will have most depreciation already absorbed. But I guess the Golf and Focus may be more desirable.

Can't remember when the current C4 was launched, just remember they left one with me for a week or so, and it was fairly nice to drive. Seats were comfy, but I couldn't quite get them in to a great position - happens in all French cars for some reason.

Astra is a decent car to drive - some are let down by the engines. 1.3 needs a good bit of pushing to get to a decent speed, but works well once you get it up there. The 1.7 versions did have a horrible flat spot in the torque - may have been ironed out now, haven't driven one for a little while. 2.0 is pretty nippy, but probably out of budget.

If you are thinking of buying at the end, the C4 would be cheap, but no warranty. Kia would be a good shout - just make sure it gets main dealer servicing so Kia can't try to weasel out.
