Im looking to pursue my interest in photography a bit more and hoping to upgrade my camera in the coming weeks. Im hoping to get a DSLR camera for xmas and would love to hear people's view on which model would be the best for using for a first timer.

    Thanks

    Whats your budget?
What do you want to shoot/what to you like shooting?
Much more info needed before a meaningful recommendation can be made

All joking aside, today they are all very, very good, even the lucky bag ones from Aldi and Lidl are amazingly good value for money.

However, building a system with a long term view then anything with Nikon or Canon on it is the way to go.

Both their entry level models are more than professionals used two years ago, really powerful stuff.

A point to watch too is the entry level camera comes with lenses that won't fit the main line cameras, it's not a huge issue, but if you have the bug you might be better advised to start at level two in either Nikon or Canon.

EOS 5D was launched back in 2005 and I really don't think that 1100D is even close enough.even now they sell for 500e second hand!it just shows how good they are.

The entry level today has more megapixels, live view, identical focusing, slightly fast frame rate and video.

The 5D is better made and does have full frame and is desirable, but I would not start there, the industry is now heavily involved with video, possibly the saving of the DSLR, who'd have thunk.

Those are actually near enough the last propertys i would look when choosing a body...
You can squeeze 41MP like Nokia did but that ain't going to make it a better camera...
Button layout, noise levels, dynamic range, IQ. That's what makes all the difference in a body. All the rest is down to a lens and photographers creativity.

Bang for buck Nikon punches above Canon in terms of Image quality. Canon is better for video. Considerably better actually.

Its really what you want to do with your DSLR. Looking to shoot stills then id go Nikon looking to shoot video and some stills then go Canon.

Check this website when shopping around. http://snapsort.com/ you can compare cameras there its really cool.

+1 for Pentax. They mostly come with a weather resistant body too, which is great for an amateur. I pant to get the K50, when I make the jump...

If you're seriously considering a Pentax, the K30 (red) is reduced this week on Amazon France. I posted it in the bargain alerts forum earlier today.
