Possibly trading S2000

So I'm threatening to trade my Honda S2000 again :)

Main reason is practicality - I've a girlfriend, dog and cat, so a two seater car makes travel quite an ordeal!

I love the S2k to bits, but weighing up my options... Front runner is likely a BMW 3 Series, either coupe or cabriolet/convertible.

My main requirements are fun to drive, not huge running costs (I realise those two don't go well together), nice on the eyes and with 4-5 seats. Two door is fine. Budget roughly 20k give or take.

Would love some recommendations or thoughts on it!
    Cheers gents.

    Cheap second car an option?

    Good S2ks are getting rare.

M3 would be the obvious choice bar running costs. Ya wanna keep the tax down I suppose something Audi with Quattro and turbo would be best.

    A5 2L T Quattro.

You will buy a mint Mazda RX-8 for less than half that budget which will more than compensate for the higher running costs.

Alternatively what about a Golf GTi or Civic Type R:

I did my homework on the RX-8 prior to buying the S2k and although they're lovely, the MPG and worry about the wankel engine would break my heart.

Always disliked Golfs, and I guess (as horrendously prickish as it sounds) I like the image the BMW gives over the Civic.

I'd be leaning towards a 325i right now, I think...

    The 1.6 diesel.

Iv heard from owners its a animal of a engine.

R32? 4wd and more power than a gti.

    Or..

If you are stuck on a 325i would you not just go the while hog for a 330i/335i? Tax will still be the same (assuming its pre 08) and the fuel hit would surely be more than worth it..

The biq question is, how much do you want for the s2000? :p

I have Rx8 and its great if u get proper example.Dont afraid Wankel because is wankel.Cost of rebuild wankel is much less than rebuild micra engine :P ,1.3 tax also .
    Would u consider Accord Euro R 2.0 vtec 220bhp or Evo 8?

If you want to stick honda how about an FN2 or FD2 TypeR or Accord CL7 EuroR? All meet all your requirements, usual Honda reliability and fairly bulletproof k20 variant engines, running costs similar to the s2000 but with added practicality and all are still able to move and nice to drive.

That seems very expensive for a 6/7 year old 2.5L petrol car, regardless of the badge.

I really, really don't get the love for BMWs on this forum - it's kinda ironic that someone mentioned the Octavia which was the previous "default choice" until people got sick of the joke. They're just not up to the hype IMO and they're everywhere with the "cheap tax" on the 5's

OP as already noted an S2000 is something of a rarity - I'd look for something equally special rather than putting another 3 series on the road... there's already been some good suggestions here (liking that Skyline!)

Just know that some of us didn't buy a BMW because of the badge but moreso due to the car's engine, performance and style.

Not all of us drive 320d's ;)

Well whatever about not understanding love for BMW on here, someone lately say their old Passat was more nice / better than 3 or 5 series  That I struggle with understaiding.

Ah well speckd passat vs a paddy spec 3 series. Meh I'd probably choose the passat as well in that case

Assuming you mean me then yes and I stand by that.

My last 06 Passat was a lot more spacious, had a better control/cabin layout, and was a lot more responsive that the E39 530d I had for a week or so. The 520d E60 I had after that wasn't much better but at least it didn't sound like an 80s Dublin Bus like the E39 did.

The subsequent E60 525d MSport was better yes but still not a patch on my/the C6 A6 it was supposed to compete against. The A6 is a far bigger car, logically laid out, and as for that clunky (and I mean you could hear it clunk as you moved the controller) iDrive system....

But hey, each to their own. I think BMW is now doing what others have accused VW of in the past - trading on past glories - though to be fair the newer F10 does look a lot better (inside and out - didn't get to drive one yet though) than it's predecessors.

Personally though I think my next car will be another A6 (maybe an A7 if they've come down in price by then), or something from the Merc stable.. friend of mine recently bought a very nice CL500, though I'd probably go for an E-class or CLS myself as I prefer saloons :)

that bmw in the ad is very nice in my opinion. Good engine and spec compared to the sub 1k bangers of 3 series people love on here

Listen to this man, mothball the S2000 and buy an old focus st 2.0, and tax the honda May to sept every year.

That's one strong option I'm looking at alright... Mine was ridiculously babied and getting another in that condition down the road would be next to impossible...

As for the BMW options, I'd be hoping to avoid huge tax rates so 08+ would be preferable... The 700e for the S2k pains me enough... 1200e just ain't an option :)

Very few 6 pot petrol BMWs sold here from 2008 onwards. Also don't get hung up on cheap motor tax. The higher motor tax of pre 2008 ones is built into the purchase price. So you can either pay it in motor tax for a pre 2008 car or pay it in the asking price of the 2008 onwards ones with lower motor tax, assuming you find one.

Might need to go to the UK for a nicely specced 325/330 petrol.
I think the 325 and 330 post 2008 are the same tax? Go for the 330i in that case...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,487 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

From late 2007 the 325i became 3.0 litre.
