I had noticed these splodgy stains on the paintwork, but they looked like fingerprints and I thought they were plastic trim cleaner or something like that. After washing and detaring, it's obvious they are some kind of defect in the paint. They seem to be rough to the touch, and I'm worried that it's bird sh*t that has etched through the clear coat:

    After a wash:

After de-tar it's better, but still very noticeable.

Assuming it's etched into the clear coat, what are my options? Is there anything that will fix it short of a machine polish (my DA budget is getting blown on a leather interior next week...)

Looks similar to my car... the handprints (identifying the guilty as my granddaughter so I couldn't get mad!) were caused by sun tan lotion covered hands.

No trees were harmed in the posting of this message, however a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

As above...sun cream marks!! Hand polish may work but in my experience machine polish is the only guaranteed solution.

Have heard, but not tired, that heating the area, say with a hair dryer, helps draw it out, but as said...no experience with that option.

sh1te. Just been reading up on sun cream on DW. Looks like a machine polish alright. Some people are saying SRP will remove them, but I think thats when they are fresh. They are rough to the touch, so I think I'll need something with more cutting ability.

I might have to live with them for a while.

SRP will only cover them up but won't remove them unfortunately - need something abrasive. A good compound by hand would even sort them out.

Not always. I've posted this a few times but I had a full size sun cream hand print on the bonnet of a dark blue car for ages before I attempted to remove it. Meguiars Scratch X got rid of it never to return

Easy peasy, a lick of polish will rid it.
