So I've a new build with an ASRock H61M-VG4 motherboard, and an SSD.

I've a bootable installation USB for XP which I have used on another PC, and it works.

When I set the USB to the default boot device in BIOS, the black screen with the flashing underscore comes up as usual. Normally on a PC the next thing would be a message saying "Press any key to boot from USB or CD ROM" or something similar, but nothing is coming up, so I cannot install the OS.
I do not have a dvd drive so that is not an option

    Thanks

IN the BIOS set the SSD to first preference then the USB. Also try resetting the Bios to default settings.

Also make sure you are using a USB 2 in a USB 2 slot and a USB 3 in a USB 3 slot.

When you power on first, one of the screens will say something like "Press F2/Del to setup", and there'll probably also be another option which will be be something like "Press F12 for boot options". Press whatever key it says for boot options and it should give you a list of whatever devices it has detected and you should be able to pick out your USB key.

    Tried both no luck !

Yes, I've tried F12 to select boot device, it detects the USB, but when I select it it's back to the flashing underscore.

    Thanks for the replies

Try another usb key and try booting something else like Ubuntu from usb. The "press a button" usually only appears when you boot from Cd, usb should automatically go to boot when set in the boot order.

Ok so it was definitely something to do with the USB's. I tried RUFUS for making a bootable usb, as well as using terminal, they were bootable on some but not all PC's. I downloaded a torrent from pirate bay called "Make Bootable USB Pen Drive For Windows XP,Windows 7,And Windows", and it took about an hour to process, and now, as I type XP is installing on the new machinge :D

    Thanks for all your help.

XP? I'm impressed that somebody made a tool for that, you used to have to nick files off a server install and do some wizardry to get it to boot off a USB.

You really should look at getting off XP. Its going to be a quagmire of zero day hacks in April/June, Microsoft is not going to support it.

Our printer will not scan without pressing a few buttons on it to get to a WSD scan function, before using windows fax and scan on 7, whereas on XP it scans without doing a thing.

Otherwise I'd be straight onto 7. I'll say it to the boss again and see.
    Thanks!
