I figure no harm in a central point of chit-chat for results, counts & exit polls as they happen.

    Let's....get....political!

    First indications of turnout.

Ok I suppose considering the lousy weather:

Some areas in the mid 20's as of this evening apparently.

Should be over 50% by 10pm.

Apathy will be the big winner.

The fact that we consider 50% a good turn out is pretty sad. People moan about politics bit couldn't be arsed doing something about it.

Apathy really is the winner here.

Should it be compulsory to cast your vote.? Something akin to Jury service where a person may be fined for not voting without a valid excuse.??

    Yes, it should.

We should put it to a referendum.

We should put it to a referendum.

That would be unfair... The people who wouldn't vote wouldn't vote :)

I was working at a polling station in D7. We were steady all day with about 50%. Other stations in the area hit mid 20s.
A lot depended on demographics of the area.

Everywhere I've heard of has had decent turnout, possibly marginally up on last time. Apparently RTE always say turnout is down.

58% turnout may not be so bad considering many of the other 40% probably emigrated or may be dead

Net emigration would account for about 0.7% of the population.

    Apathy trumps all.

For those fortunate enough to reside in the garden of Ireland, Stephen Keaton is live tallying again.

His Google doc of the tally is here:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G23sy7C9khX0_a2HnKR3xh6Gd4kRvt47BxoqO4-nIP8/htmlview?usp=sharing&pli=1&sle=true#

To be expected, Harris is at 45% in the Euros.
SF & Indies doing very well.
FG surprisingly poor for a 3 x FG TD county.
Labour practically at the margin of error.

Extraordinary result for Donnelly topping the poll in Dublin West. Looks like Coppinger may get it on transfers but surely Donnelly is certain in the next General Election

The question is where FG votes are going to go when they eliminate Coughlan. FF? Seems unlikely. But then so do SF & SP.

After 2nd count, Donnelly is only 8 votes in front!

    Donnelly - 6120 votes
    Coppinger - 6112 votes

Can I throw in a quick question?

The main person around here is going for MEP and for the council. Looking at the RTE website she's pretty certain to retain the council seat

What happens if she is elected to the council and a few hours later gets MEP? Now she'll take MEP I assume so what happens the council seat?

Surely not a by election right after this election, that would be crazy :pac:

A colleague is co-opted to take the council seat.

have both been elected in the first count.

    First Count Carrickmacross/Castleblayney area:

    Matt Carty SF elected.

21 year old Stephen Cunningham topping the poll at 20.3% for SF in Cork City North East (my area), elected on the first count.

Ted Tynan for Worker's Party close behind on 20.1%, also elected.

Seen on Twitter an update from Dublin West:

    SP 8807
    FF 8163
    SF 7028

SF transfer toxicity hasn't gone away you know.

    Edit; SF candidate now eliminated.

Extraordinary that he topped the poll and fell to third! Will be interesting to see if the pattern of transfer-toxic Sinn Fein continues when the last seat is up for grabs in some of the local areas.

20% guarantees a seat in any four-seater. However, come the general election if Burton runs again, there will be Varadkar, Coppinger, McGuinness and Burton, all competing for a seat as well. Would be hard to see him repeating his performance then.

It is not extraordinary that transfers are not going to Donnelly. This is a by-election, there was zero chance of Donnelly getting elected, there is an excellent chance in the GE

All over in Citywest now. Coppinger not reaching the quota but elected.

    Coppinger: 12,334
    McGuinness: 9,237

    They did

    Coppinger + 3527, 12334

    McGuinness + 1074, 9237

    The rest were non-transferable

But if he is to win a Dail seat even in a general election he will need transfers. As will SF all over the country. As I said already it will be interesting to see if this transfer toxicity is repeated around the country in the locals as the counts come in. If it is, it will put a big brake on the rise of SF.

Donnelly's best chance was in this by-election with the anti-government feeling and the big-hitters like Varadkar and Burton not interested in promoting an internal rival in the constituency. This meant Donnelly was up against FF and SP and he finished third.

Funny when some 'sophisticated' people have a great laugh when culchies elect so-called Gombeens like Lowry and Healy-Rae and then proceed to elect Hannifin themselves in Dun Laoighre/Blackrock...:confused:

Varadkar was Talking up Sinn Fein on TV earlier basically saying it was SF or FG to lead the next Government. Basically trying to neutralize the FF challenge that hasn't gone away. After all they've done they still get transfers, something SF still don't really seem to be able to do. Midlands North West is going to be very interesting tomorrow.

Yes, provided you have the democratic option of voting " none of the above" or otherwise spoiling your vote. I didn't vote once because I couldn't make up my mind between the pros and cons. Bad citizenship? I don't think so,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Witchie

Monaghan Electoral area is going to a recount as FG candidate Barra Flynn was only put out by 5 votes less than Siobhan Cheung of SF. Tomorrow should be fun!
