Expired Passport for Alcohol?

Firstly, sorry, I have no clue which section to post this, so if a mod could move it that would be great.

Just wondering if an expired passport is an acceptable form of ID to buy alcohol with. I'm going to a concert that's on the same day as my 18th birthday, but my passports expired, and it would take to long to renew it.

    Any ideas?

As far as I know they have the right to refuse you, but from personal experience most of the time they won't refuse to serve you.

It would need to be some very diligent bouncer to spot the passport is out of date. They usually are busy looking at the picture and DOB.

Unless its a snipped passport, then you will be in trouble.

Technically, they could refuse as it is not an acceptable ID but I think you will be safe!

Get a garda Id or provisional drivers licence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Rabbo

No way, everyone knows that once your passport expires you revert to being underage again

You have to be 18 to apply for one.

I'm afraid post being post that I'll get it back after the concert and be stuck with no passport at all.

They prob wont notice its expired. Get your mate to buy your beers if your not confident. IF they ask, you can show your ID.

So I'm guessing your passport has a picture of a 7 year old you.
How on earth will the bouncers/bar staff accept that!?

I remember being refused years back with an expired passport. I told the bouncer I didn't want to go on holiday abroad, just wanted to have a pint.

It didn't help the situation. :pac:

I have pretty "noticeable" features... if that helps...

Passports for under 18s last for 5 years only.

Carrying a valuable document like a passport about to prove your age is stupid no matter what age you are. Get Garda ID or some other acceptable form of ID.

You can get a driving learner permit at 17, not 18.

Don't have a provisional yet. And I need a valid passport to get one.

If your passport has expired they can legally only sell you beer past it's best before date.

It's an out of date passport, so it's not really valuable anymore.

You can't get a Garda ID when you're under 18.

I just need it to buy drink by the way. Surely I'll be served by someone?

It'll be fine. I used an expired passport for years.

If you pay me into the concert, buy me drink all night and don't stand near me, ill buy your drinks for you

Yeah I don't really get stuff like this, Out of date passport with reasonable picture is a valid form of identification as the expiry date is for the travel use aspect of the document. As the information provided on the passport will never change. It's stupid tbh just another tax I mean your birth cert does not go out of date...I mean if you have changed in appearance a lot since the picture that's the only time you should need to change the passport.

Give a friend with valid Id your ticket.
He goes in, has a few pints , watches the gig and then sneaks a pint of beer out to you after the gig.
As you slurp the warm flat beer he tells you all about the gig.
    Best solution all round.

It's not a requirement for getting a new one, though it does make the process easier.

There's some rule about only being issued so many as well though, so you're always best to give the old one back.

It's not as if your date of birth changes once your passport expires. What a load of balls if they refuse it.

I use my expired passport all the time for buying drink, have never once had an issue, even in Tesco and it expired two years ago.

You do not need a passport to get a driving permit.
    Who told you that nonsense?

You have to be 18 to but drink too. What's the problem??

I have my expired passport (with the corners cut) that I bring with me for ID, I rarely need it but on the one occasion I did a bouncer said he couldn't accept it because it wasn't a valid passport.
What!? I didn't realise crossing the threshold of the pub was entering into a different country. Fúcking idiot.

If you apply for one on your 18th birthday, it won't be ready for a couple of weeks.

    Is that not incredibly obvious?

It has an expiry date, it expired, thus making it invalid.

and the bouncer is the ****ing idiot. .....

Invalid for use as a passport. It still works to show my age and identification.

Invalid for international travel. Not invalid as a photographic representation of a person that contains their date of birth.

By law, I'm required to confiscate your expired passport

It would not be seen as a valid proof of identity by most institutions i.e. banks, insurance companies, government depts etc.

I agree, and I don't have a problem with that. This is a different situation though.

Not really sure it is. The question is whether the expired passport is good for use as ID. If we are saying its invalid for:
    International travel
ID for opening a xtra-vision account
ID for making a withdrawal from your bank account

Then why is it suddenly acceptable for buying drink?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭gavindublin

No it's not, stop making stuff up.

You show me the sign in the passport office that says gets you away on holidays and gets you into the boozer.

its a travel document. By default it a valid form of id when its valid. When its an invalid form of id its invalid.
Then the best before catcher thinks he can take it and its theft.
