When do you sell the calves?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Usually keep best of the heifers for replacements and sell steers following spring

To get the most out of angus cattle you need to finish them. Only ai angus bull I've used recently is ZFL, they are at yearling stage now, well shaped and grew well. https://webapp.icbf.com/bull-search/view/744460411

That's the plan anyway, I think there is only a few of his daughters calved so far.

You could use an easy calving Blonde bull instead if Angus to get a better weight and shape

Would blondes tolerate the west of Ireland land and climate

Think you should look at other breeds easy calving and maternal - Salers, Shorthorns and Herefords too, as black calves are always worth that little bit less.

Especially if you are not in a finishing system.

Also, there are easy calving Limousin - HCA, FTY and Charolais - LZF NPP out there.

Would consider shorthorn and Hereford not sure about docility of salers have limos at mo am finding them bad enough especially around calving. Has anybody had any trouble with docility in calving two year old limousin heifers

anyone have a suggestion for an easy calving blonde? we are considering a change to them here, but dont want hassle at calving. running a limo bull at the moment, but want to bring a bit more size into the offspring. would be running on aaxbf cows

Had a son of OXY here, running with similar cows to you, nearly all calved by themselves. Blondes can be hard to finish though.

Cheers, have you finished any of these off the aax cows? Would the early finish angus genes come through at all to help finish them earlier?

depending on which AI you use the Dovea bull BJB is a new bull with good size in calves on the ground. another option could be a red angus generally bigger but the limo will calve them for you. A neighbour has used one on Limo a few years ago worked well, he has kept a good few of the daughters in the herd. Currently he is running a Limo again for 2 years and back again to red Angus

Do you mean BJG, Bunlahy John? He has serious figures for muscle and skeletal on paper anyway. Do you have any opinion on BJG, LZE or ZLL as bulls to put on LimousinX cows and maybe keeping a few heifers off them for breeding?

Yes have finished bulls, mostly to a 2+ fat cover at 22mths approx, AA genes maybe comes through, but ones out of a hereford x angus cow did fatten earlier.

sorry you are right... my typo. I have only seen young calves off him and they are serious calves..I would not use him on heifers or dairy though as there may be calving problems. I don't have any experience of the Red Angus (all black by me) other than a neighbour that use a son of LZE and he is happy with the daughters now. They are off Limo X cows
