I just heard on the radio news that BT Sport Ultra HD is commencing for the new soccer season starting with the Carling Cup! It stated they will be 1st to deliver it ahead of Sky

The handful of people who will be able to watch it will be thrilled I am sure. It is important to note that this channel will be exclusive to BT Infinity customers in the UK and will not be on satellite.

If only for UK why was Irish radio news making a big story about it? They never said it was exclusive to UK

Its on satellite, seen it on a scan earlier.

The BBC and every other site covering it are saying BT Infinity only. I am sure it will appear on satellite with time.

What is the frequency? I saw the BT Sport European channel today but must have missed the Ultra HD channel.

Yup. This won't be on Sky anytime soon, at least until they have a Sky Digibox capable of recieving it.

I am not sure why anyone apart from BT should be making a song and dance about it. It's not a UK/Ireland thing - they have all the Irish rights they need (no more black outs from August on) but a lack of the technology needed to view it thing.

They can receive some of the channels but they cant decode the ones encoded in hevc.

Vu are bringing out a new receiver ,the Solo 4k
It will be an Arm processor not MIPS.
It looks great but it will be expensive,>500 euro

I can only assume Satkurier don't like hotlinking and used it to their advantage?

It's a big step forward for BT never-the less, Ultra-HD sets will come down and I for one will want a piece of that action.

I'd be happy if we could just take a step backwards to the Astra 1 analogue days, I swear the picture quality was better on that than it is today on Sky Digital's pixilated SD channels.

HD still isn't fulled available in Ireland by all our broadcasters so it will be years before UHD takes off. We will also need fibre to every home in the country before UHD can happen properly.

Having recently changed from UPC to Sky it appears to me that the picture quality difference between SD and HD on Sky is far greater than on UPC. This may just be a matter of perception on my part.

Do you mean that you think that SD is worse on Sky than UPC?

It may be a bit of both, worse SD and better HD. But as I say it may be just perception. I've bought a new TV and that may also have affected it.

It could be the new tv's settings .

Most tvs come with contrast , brightness and sharpness set too high .
This makes HD look striking but SD looks washed out and grainy.

I switched the other way, from Sky to UPC - but still use the old Sky box for ITV4, C4 HD, ITVHD, the BBC HD channels, etc.
I also find the volume on the channels is much higher on UPC.

A lot of the main SD channels now have Irish opt out adverts. I find these Irish versions of the SD channels are not as good as the normal UK version. Then, you also have a lot more poor quality stations on Sky (and all +1s) where the bitrate used is only bare minimum.

I love the way these people get ahead of themselves when it comes to technology.

So they are going to give us 4k?

How about getting good quality HD to us first.

The new UHD box will be provided from BT.

The new box from BT requires both a 4K TV set and infinity broadband to view the channel as the new UHD box is only viewed online.
