It is rather bizarre that out of all the people that entered the competition someone who didn't enter or have a Facebook account won!

As well as that, if poor May Lydon is real they should have posed with her in the picture to make it seem legit. It just seems odd that they do a picture of her, on her own, no handover of keys, no tax or insurance discs visible.

Exactly that is the whole crux of the issue. No one wants to do business with a
pack a liars. This dealer should adopt a redemptive course of action as quick as possible because this situation is now festering. As a company they risk now being known as "the Audi dealer who ran the fake Facebook competition" among the public. This could haunt them for years to come. And I'm sure this perception is not exactly aligned with the brand values of Audi.

I think the company would have taken advice on it. Sometimes the best course of action in these cases is to say nothing, for the time being at least. Damage limitation.

If you read the comments on the facebook page, they would be very silly to start explaining themselves because they are not going to get anywhere with the mob...Any who dares question is being attacked. So whatever they say they would be attacked, so best off no response and let it die off.

There are a lot of...u r a pack of cnuts and spas (yes that horrible word was used!!!) type comments..someone else has said.... I hope you go down in flames..so any balanced person reading it would see these people are not for reasoning and best to not engage.

I would like to know what actually happened and how they explain themselves out of itbut I can fully understand why they are not currently keeping it going.

Funny you say this, because I yesterday I read an article on the woman who tweeted "going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding, I'm white!" and was hounded around the Web and lost her job etc. And the conclusion was that when the internet mob is on your case your best bet is to just refuse to engage on any of it and wait for it to pass.

May needs to lose the shades.

    She looks way too.......shady.

Agree. In fact, anybody remember the scene in Fawlty Towers where Polly
puts on these huge glasses letting on to be Sybil sick in bed. Well the glasses
    are of the same proportions.

She looks like a relative, friend of employee or actor.

Is "May Lydon" now going to disappear never to be seen again? I am sure some
radio station or newspaper would love to interview her.

Because if "May" now does a Houdini i.e. disappears. It's going to look very SUSPICIOUS.

I think I know how it went wrong.

Audi like most other marques use third party companies to manage their Facebook pages.

Only people in these companies have access to the page management functions.

So here's what I reckoned happened...

Comp goes up with image of the car and a "win" sign
Text of comp clearly states it's to win a long weekend rental of the car. (worth around €200 - about what you'd expect of a FB comp)

A load of people look at the image and forget to read the post.

It goes viral with 30,000+ new likes with a Chinese whisper type share with people telling others a free car is to be won.

Comp over and Audi Galway pick a winner, send him a message and he gets back to them saying he's giving the prize to his mum.

Audi Galway tell the page manager that May Lydon has won and they post it up in a standard way that they would post winner of a comp saying to contact them.

    And then he'll breaks loose.

Btw - I had too much time on my hand today (herself is away) and did a little digging. There's a David Lydon from Galway who lives in stutgart with red hair. A pic if the car driving in Galway has a red head passenger who looks similar to a brother of the stutgart David Lydon (fb detective work).

So it does seem that whilst it's a lesson how not to run a FB comp, it does actually seem genuine.

Funny thing (if my guess us right) the David Lydon in stutgart works in Mercedes-Benz design team!!!

From my experience, in companies where there is a culture of lies and deceit they tend not be very good companies to do business with anyway.

In fact, I just looked at their Google Reviews and sure enough...

Terrible experience here. Bought a brand new A4 and the engine ceased within a week. I was pushed from pillar to post even though my vehicle was under warranty. They avoided my phone calls, were evasive and basically broke my heart. I would avoid this dealership like the plague.."

Bought a 2010 Audi A6 in May 2015 the deal was that they would mirror the warranty against the audi approved plus for 12 months as I live in Limerick and if i ever had a breakdown etc I could use my local Audi dealer in Limerick for repair instead of travelling back to Galway. However I have the car now just under 3 months and it's going back to the garage in Galway for a 3rd time next week! Sold and promised one thing and then told another after the sale. Have been told now that the car must come back to Galway each time it needs repaired. Next time I will buy elsewhere."

I'll bet those reviews went up yesterday evening or today. I'll also bet that neither of them live near Galway nor own (or ever will own) an Audi.

Do you REALLY believe a brand new a4 would seize in a week? Please don't say you do.

From the journal yesterday evening, the car dealership had a person who said that "David and May will be here tomorrow to collect the car"

Where was David in the picture.

Haha I thought the exact same thing. The whole thing is just comical. LOVE how they put her really far away and with sunglasses on so noone will recognise her.

People in Galway should have lined up outside the car dealership this morning. But that's what they were expecting and they found someone for pictures. But with a line of people May would also have to get the keys and drive it off.

And where is David on Facebook? Just one post and picture of his mammy on Audi Facebook page with all this ****storm. He was in touch with them yesterday. He didn't just fall off the face off the planet. Or will we get an update on Tuesday.

Dammit, if only I'd found out about this in time, I would out there ready to pick up that Audi with my wig and sunglasses...

580 likes on Facebook with the winner "May Lydon" picking up the keys.

Not one of those likes from her son who entered her. Not one like from David Lydon for his mammy.

He's gone on Bikini Cruise Tour with 70 Bikini Cruise Girls that he won last week.

    He's probably too busy

A preview to May Lydons A3 review. " When I found out I won a FB competition to drive an Audi A3 Cabriolet, I couldn't wait to sit in the Super Sport Seat PS6 and hear the roar of the 2.5ltr 7 speed and start the car. Wondering when I get to go if when it would be safe to use all of its 369hp, I decide not I won't until I get past Tuam and onto to some good driving roads with a few hairpins only us locals know as the giants elbow. With giant 19" rotor rims backed by wave front discs and calipers I could just imagine the noise emmeting from the RSs Dual branch exhaust system with oval tailpipe trim. I couldn't wait as my son David dropped me off at the garage. My eagerness dropped as I looked at the badge, a dirty 1.6TDi 110 bhp Diesel sh1tbox, nobody around I found only a young lad with a camera who took a photo, I then found the keys under the seat and set off into the traffic and headed to tescos to do the shopping. FU Audi, I will never be your fall guy again.

So was it fake or real?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Truth be told, if they were offering me a good price on an Audi, I wouldn't care what they put up on their social media pages, and I'd care even less what those who were never going to buy and Audi from them in the first place might think!

(nothing against you jetson but money comes before morals for most people, how do you think Apple, Google and thousands of other companies stay in business exactly?)

But you'd trust that everything was above board with the car and they would assist should any problems arise? I sure as hell wouldn't if this is the kind of stunts they're pulling for a bit of publicity.

Yes I would, just about as much as I trust Google with my privacy, or Apple with selling me a phone that doesn't have a dodgy antenna. Consumer laws and all that, but on a brand new car I don't expect there will be any issues, and I wouldn't be bothered checking social media reviews for whether to buy and Audi in an Audi garage or not.

As somebody who doesn't work in a dealership, I don't know why I should expect there would be any issues with a brand new car?

Obviously you're going to see more issues than I do, I imagine you sell more cars than I buy.

Do you know that new cars get driven around a lot. Often between show rooms. Maybe Belfast and Dublin. Potential customers might take one for a few hours or a day to try it out. The clock will be rolled back.
And some cars even when they come off the production line might have a fault(s) monday morning job.

Well sure, of course I know all that, I've worked in the IT industry for 20 odd years and I've seen the behind the scenes stuff that goes on there too. That still doesn't mean that when I walk into PC World or wherever to buy a laptop, that I expect to walk out with a heap of sh1t.

I also have the same expectation when I buy a car, I'm not interested in the sales patter. It's only the car and getting the best value for my money that interests me.

This post shows you might be rowing back from it maybe. But your original point was that because you were buying something new you were sure exactly what you were getting and so trust in the seller was irrelevant. You said that if audi galway were selling at the right price you would buy regardless of their facebook antics.

Whilst it is not in the same league as buying a second hand car you still need a degree of trust in who you buy a new car off.
I never do business with anyone who has demonstrated deception or dishonesty in any way shape or form.

I still stand by what I said and that's why I made the point about money coming before morals for most people, and I used Apple and Google as examples to demonstrate that point - they're constantly, constantly slated on social media by unhappy customers that feel they were sold a lemon.

I don't particularly put much stock in people's opinions of their business practices, I'm only interested in reviews of their products and services. If Johnny McKeyboard Warrior is breaking Audi Galway's balls and his Facebook profile shows he drives a boy-racer punto or whatever, I'm not inclined to take Johnny's opinion too seriously.

Does that make any better sense?

Well it's up to everyone what they want to do. But personally I'd error on the side of caution.
