    Hi all,

I am looking to save a few €€ so I'm selling my 09 Honda Accord and I am looking for something that is cheap on tax, comfortable, well equipped, reliable and (this is where the jeep idea came from) able to carry a couple of mountain bikes.

Age and mileage are not overly important but something within the last 10 years and sub 150,000 miles would suffice!

    Can anybody recommend anything?

Also Is commercial insurance any cheaper than private car insurance?

I don't think your going to save much money on this venture, the only real benefit will be the extra space. 4x4s are thirsty yokes and for the most part are not overly comfortable. Maybe something like a Nissan X-Trail?

Thanks Bazz, so would you suggest X-Trail or Rav 4?

Also is it more beneficial to go commercial or passenger?

Commercial motor tax is €333 per year but you also have the annual €100 CVR test that commercials have to do so it can be swings and roundabouts when it comes to actually saving money.

You must know very little if you are suggesting an x-trail to the op.

Why do you say that 316?

Thought the X-Trail would fit the bill no??

So why not contribute something useful in the shape of a recommendation, instead of just trying to appear clever?

The x trails are a bucket of rubbish, the 2.5s have a chocolate engine. The 2.2s are as equal crap. 8k for less than 10 years is a big ask.

You would get a D Max for that ball park money, probably the best 4x4 out there at the moment. But to be honest, if your only going to be carrying a few bikes, would a Transit or Ducato not be better? Do you need rear seats?

A 4wd transit is as rare as hens teeth.

My point being, the OP may not need four wheel drive at all. In which case a van might be a lot more practical.

A van recommendation is better than an x-trail all day long.

No 4x4 will allow you stand the bikes upright within the rear body. ( ok, I know a pick up will) and you will end up sliding them in on top of each other, and pedals of one damaging spokes of another, etc. That's why I think a van might suit better.

    Thanks for your help.

Is there a law where you have to use a van for work purposes or am I mistaken?

I don't particularly need 4 wheel drive, just wanted something comfortable, reliable and doesn't cost the world to buy or run.

Perhaps a small van would do the trick!

you will need a commercial business to register for commercial tax too

    Thanks Notch000,

With a family member having their own business, could they register a commercial jeep that way?

No you don't. You just need a valid reason to tax it commercially and your job profession aids this. Hence the job title section of the goods declaration form.

So if I was to put down that I'm a teacher it wouldn't help.

If I said I did deliveries for my father's business (unpaid) would that count?

Possibly, but you have to convince the insurance company to give you commercial policy too. They ask for your profession and what kind of business use it will get.

My job involves visiting building sites everyday so I passed no problem. I'm not 100% how strict they are on it but I know one company wouldn't quote me when I said I worked in a council, they just assumed a desk job but when he let me finish, he quoted no probs.
