I often see this car parked near Stephens green or outside the Shelbourne, at least 10 times in the last 2 years. How is the owner getting away with this? I think it may be from Kuwait, if you or iI were on northern plates wewouldn't last long

Is that the same one that goes down the N11 in the bus lane driving like a raging c*&t for at least 5 years? He's rocking diplomatic plates on it.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/temporary-exemption-foreign-registered.html

Max 12 months which can be extended if the person is here as say a student, "A longer period may apply where a person is on a task of definite duration in the State."

Seen this one on Stephen's Green at the start of last October. If it's still around it's flouting the spirit of the law if not the letter.

Pretty sure that's the one. Didn't see any CD stickers on it though

That yoke belongs to a Kuwaiti student. He used to play 5 a side with us in Stillorgan.

How do you know he is breaking the law, do you have knowledge that he with does not have or has been refused and exemption?

If a student prob has an exemption. If a Kuwati student then paying full fees say it is Med then the bones of €20,000 a year I assume he would get an exemption for the asking if he has not done so.

Well I know the vehicle has been around for a few years so I wrongly presumed it was breaking the rules for foreign registered vehicles. If it's owned by a student with the exemption I'm sure it's all above board and I doubt you could drive around the middle of Dublin for years without attracting the attention of the law. Decent car if it has a V8 anyway but I wonder if insurance is tricky given the situation.

No student is resident, but as noted above if I was a Guard I might be interested in the insurance.

It is a bit of a weird situation, I'm wondering if they require insurance from a company operating in Ireland or if the home country's insurance can be used?

Yes a student is resident and will have a stamp two permission endorsed in his passport, which will allow him to work 20 hours a week during term and 40 hours a week during holidays. The residency does not count towards naturalisation, but a. Non national student is a resident all be it with restricted permission.

I have in the past insured non Irish registered vehicle in Ireland and also did it in UK, Had no issue.

A student is not normally resident for VRT purposes, which is the issue here.

This may well be the case here.

    Interesting question.
Kuweit is not part of Green card insurance system, so looks like insurance from there could not be valid in Ireland.
I believe he would need to have Irish policy on this car.

There is tons of cars with arabic plates in Dublin 2. You will see them every so often. A few years ago I used to see about 10 different cars with arabic plates. I wouldnt be surprised if they had no insurance, as you never really see checkpoints between the 2 canals. I go into town at least twice a day for the last 10 years. I have only once seen a check point between the 2 canals. Where as driving down a normal street in the suburbs you might get a check points every few months

Any insurance company can insure anything anywhere in the world for whatever risks they want to take on, that's up to the insurance company.
Do you really think all those middle eastern Ferraris and Lamborghinis driving around London are not insured.
The thing is in Ireland we are so used to being told what we can't have and generally repressed as far as motor insurance goes that we think its the norm everywhere.

What I don't get is how they don't have to change the Arabic script plates to something legible as they may as well have no plates at all as far as identification goes.
