A Digital Detox

Guys, you're gonna have to bear with me on this one, it'll be a long one! I was going to post this in the boards outage thread but I think it deserves a thread of it's own, because my addiction isn't just to boards but to other social media sites and to my phone in general.

So last week I was saying how I could really do with a digital detox, as I'm over-reliant on my phone and addicted to certain sites. For those of you who don't know what a digital detox is, it's basically stepping away from gadgets/technology/the interwebs/any technological stimulus. In short, taking a break from your smartphone and the interwebs.

I wasn't addressing the universe when I was saying this, but obviously the universe heard me and thought 'Hmmm, digital detox you say? Well, let's make it happen'.

So, maybe two days later my laptop charger died. :( Frustrating but I still had my phone and it wasn't too much hassle to order another charger, it just meant I couldn't watch what I wanted to.

About a day after that happened, I let my phone fall down the sh*tter. I left it in a bag of rice for 3 days but the Asians must have been under pressure because they did not come in the night to fix my phone. :(

I thought I 'd survive with the old Nokia smartphone I'm currently using which has absolutely nothing on it. I think it cost about 100 euro at the time of purchase which was at least 4 years ago. I was lucky enough to even get whatsapp on it. After about 2 days with the old phone, I got a message from one of my friends 'Christy, are you alive? You haven't been opening my snaps. I don't know what you've had for breakfast/lunch/dinner, whether you've been to the gym or if your life is still amazing because I haven't received any snaps from you.' So now, all 3 of snapchat friends are missing out on my selfies and important moments in my life. :( The only good-ish thing about the phone is the camera, but what is the point in having a good camera when you can't send willie pics to everyone?

Because the phone I'm using is an absolute dose, it took me ages to reply to my friend, so she sends a second message 'Christy, I see you've read my message and you normally reply within .1 of a second because contrary to your snaps, your life actually isn't that great'. So after struggling for a half an hour on whatsapp, I finally get the message sent to let her know I'm actually alive and not too worry. So whenever I see a whatsapp message notification instead of being like 'ohhhh someone loves me', it's more like 'Oh gawd, it's gonna take me ages to get onto whatsapp and even longer to reply on this kunt of a phone'. Half my messages were like 'dkhsjdhjsk' because the phone likes having a stroke every now and again.

Anyway, so I don't have snapchat and whatsapp is sh*te on this phone, what gives? I'll be fine, I'll just log into boards and get my daily fix of what's happening. Boards is down, DDoS attack....this CANNOT BE HAPPENING! Fcuk you DDoS, whoever you are, ya kunt. How the hell am I gonna get my cyber word count in for the week?! I'm not on facebook. Welllll, that's a lie, I do have an account with no friends on it that no one knows about (shush!!) to follow my gym but I log in so rarely it's probably time for it to go. I was full blown addicted years ago with 5788 friends, all of which I knew personally of course, but I decided that account needed to die and so it did. I do miss the passive aggressive status updates and creeping on people but something has gotta give. Back on topic, my current account wasn't going to give me the social media fix I needed!

Okaaayyy boards is down. Hmmm. I'll just do other stuff! I went to book into a gym session and realised I don't have the gym app on my old piece of sh*t phone, so I can't book in. I had to email the guys to book me in like a proper plebeian.

On Sunday I decided I'd bring my dog out for a long walk and when I got to where I wanted to go, I realised there is no music on the phone and the interwebs is soooo slow and won't play youtube videos. GAH! The radio, it has the radio, thank feck! Off we go and I was trying to figure out a route we could take back to the car......google maps won't fcuking load! Oh you kunt of thing. After asking for directions, we finally made it back to the car.

Out of sheer desperation, I decided enough was enough and went to carphone warehouse to get a new phone. I looked at a few phones and the deals with them etc. The one I wanted was out of stock. Motherfcukers! They said it should be in the next day, definitely by Friday. I rang them today and it'll probably be Monday now.

Fcuk you universe, fcuk you. On the upside, my laptop charger arrived a few days ago.

Sooooooo, are you addicted to the ol' smartphone/social media sites? Ever done the whole digital detox thing or did you ever get stranded in Ballyfun after losing your phone to 4 penguins? How did ya cope? Or do you think I'm an awful gobsh*te and ya could go weeks without the interwebs/phone?

    Tell me your stories.

I kinda like moving my sim card in to a 10 year old unsmart nokia every now and then. Usually when on holidays.
Cut the umbilical cord of my internet addiction.
That said, the first 22 years of my life were internet free and I had no side effects....

I let my phone fall in the toilet too, not the first time either :o
I put all the pieces on a hot radiator for the night and put it back together the next morning and theres not a bother on it.

I dropped my last phone in a mug of tea. The rice sorted it that time. Unfortunately, I ended up losing that phone in Dundrum, along with all my shopping. To say I'm a clusterfcuk would be the understatement of the century.

Tried that before, only lost a pound in a month. It's not very effective.

I dropped my last phone in a mug of tea.

Ive done that before too! I was in work and dropped it into a half full mug of tea. So I dashed to the bathroom and took it apart to dry it under the hand dryer.

But when I was drying my sim card I had it flat on the palm of my hand blowing air on it when all of a sudden the air swooshes it up out of my hand and it goes flying through the air like it was possessed to the sink 2/3 feet away and goes straight down the drain!

I was standing there for 5 minutes with my jaw dropped wondering what the hell just happened! I just had to laugh then!

Shuuuuure it can always be worse! I used to get sooooo annoyed and upset over breaking things and losing things.

It's only material shtuff at the end of the day, it can be replaced, even if it does cause some inconvenience and a hole in your pocket.

I probably should do a digital detox, when boards was down it just showed me how addicted I'd gotten to it, though I've been addicted to the internet since I started using it at the age of 12. Anyone remember MSN messenger? Those were the days :p

I'm not into snapchat, instagram, imgur, twitter etc. I do have a facebook account but I don't use it very often, mainly just the messenger. I'm mostly addicted to boards and whatsapp/viber.

I do remember MSN messenger, those were the days. I used to be a bebo stunnah as well.

I'm the same, except for snapchat. I'm not on twitter, imgur or instagram and I don't use the fb account I have.

I am seriously addicted to boards though. :/

Oooooohhh guys, I forgot to mention that because my I ordered a new phone, I am waiting for a call from Carphone warehouse. An 01 number called me yesterday and I was all like 'Yuuuuusss, phone has came in'.

It was fcuking Oxfam! Don't they realise I have first world problems to be dealing with? Your wan was going on about homelessness and starving children and I was like 'Lady, I don't have a phone. I am waiting on a very important call and you're contacting me about this'

    Some people.

Sure they weren't ringing you to see, as a respected customer of theirs, if you were interested in their new 2016 range??? :P

My phone is with eir, so it hasn't worked as a normal phone since I switched to them, it's basically a fancy looking pager at this stage, it won't even recieve calls. Its a great way to detox from phones because there's no way to get it fixed, through eir at least, I'm pretty sure they don't actually have a customer service department. Or maybe they've just taken their new "be more vague" policy to its extreme and nobody in the company knows what their job is anymore, or even which building they work in.

I actually love charity shops, the ones in the UK are much better though.

There's nothing quite like picking up a good bargain.

Judging by the extent (tl:dr) of your affliction I would prescribe a digital amputation.

Failing that a front end lobotomy and a profilic irrigation.

I am addicted to boards, facebook and whatsapp and regularly check adverts and amazon daily deals. However, when I'm on holidays with no data, I go off the grid. No emails, no facebook, nothing. Unless I'm bored with nothing to do, e.g. stuck in an airport for hours, my phone is for receiving calls (which is rare) and nothing else.

I thought I was addicted but when Boards was down I... didn't really care. I just did other things. I don't really do social media, I have accounts on Facebook and Twitter but they're rarely used.

I suppose I'm probably addicted to just having access to the internet because I'm inquisitive and always want to know things and having gotten used to being able to find an answer to anything or access information on any topic instantaneously, it becomes difficult to live without.

Soooooo...... you didn't actually do the digital detox? That's what I'm taking from this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,346 ✭✭✭King George VI

I detox every once in a while. If I'm going out of the house I'll just leave my phone at home. It's nice to just have my thoughts for company for a change. I'd much prefer to talk to people rather than have conversations over the web or on text message.

Me and my old housemates did a thing where once a week we'd leave our phones in a bowl on the table (switched off) and the 1st one to pick theirs up made all of the tea for the night. Which was about 15 cups of tea every hour if we had friends over. It was great. We talked, joked, laughed, played games or whatever.

    I suggest people do similar.

p.s. I advise against my advice if you've a sick relative or a child on the way or something actually important like that that requires you to be on call. Otherwise, give it a go.

I do this aswell. The phone battery lasts for days at a time. Plus it's great being away from the real world for a while, just checking what's going on the in the world through a trashy UK tabloid.
Then returning home to missed messages, snapchats etc and replying sorry I was away on my holliers!

Go on then.. what did you get?

I spend most of my day at a PC (well laptop), usually keep an eye on work emails for a while in the evening (I manage a global team), and then feck about on Boards far too much in between.

Still, I'm not on Facebook or Twitter (though I do have accounts - damn this thing of sites only letting you sign up with them) and I hate pics of me so stuff like snapchat and what not is out too.

And yes I remember MSN Messenger. Those WERE the days :)

Samsung Galaxy S6. I love it. It's the first time I've bought one of the expensive phones. I feel like such a w*nker. :pac:

Boards is what I'm most addicted to, I'm actually not bad on anything else. I was getting a bit stupid on snapchat though, only realised that the two weeks I was off it. I don't need to snap people my dinner and other random sh*t. I never wanted to get it, my sisters put it on my phone and then I ended up turning into them annoying kunts that take pictures of everything. Gotta reign it in.

I remember my brother saw all my MSN messages to my friends back in the day and told me about it. I was talking about a boy I like. Mortified! I must have left myself logged in. :o I deleted it after that. :pac:
