Leak at Water Meter - is this First Fix ?

    Hi

We have a leak at the water meter outside our property on the public footpath. We have received an 'offer' letter today stating Irish Water's willingness to repair the leak for free. In return we have to sign a contract accepting all T&Cs.  I am disinclined to do so on the basis that it is leaking as a consequence of the meter installation.

Why have I to sign a contract for something that was caused by bad workmanship in installing the meter in the first place ? Does this mean that if a genuine leak is found on my property, I have essentially used up my 'go' of the First Fix Scheme ?

    Hi BobbyBingo,

Apologies for the delay in responding to your query.

The First Fix Free Scheme offers customers a free leak investigation at their property where their water meter has indicated a possible leak on the external supply pipe which has triggered an alarm.

Irish Water asks that customers who qualify for the First Fix Free Scheme sign a leak repair offer form and return it to us as we need written consent from the customer to carry out works on their private property.

We hope this helps. You can read more about the First Fix Free Scheme here.

    Kind regards,
    Mairead

    Hi Mairead

Thanks for the reply but it doesn't address either of my questions. The leak is at the water meter itself out on the public footpath. My questions therefore are as before, namely:-

    1. Why have I to sign a contract for something that was caused by bad workmanship in installing the meter in the first place ?
    2. Does this mean that if a genuine leak is found on my property, I have essentially used up my 'go' of the First Fix Scheme ?

    Thanks

In order to fully investigate this leak for you and resolve the matter, we would require that a waiver be signed, as the leak may be surfacing at the meter but could be coming from another point on the external pipe.

If a leak is found at the meter, then this will not count as your leak repair from the First Fix Free scheme and if it is found to be a leak from your external pipe, then it will qualify under this scheme.

    We hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Mairead

But you didn't need a waiver to do the work originally , so why do you need one now?

As the leak could be on private property, and to ensure that we are able to resolve this as soon as possible, we would ask that a waiver be signed. This allows us to find the source of the leak and thoroughly investigate this matter.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Mairead

Thanks Mairead for your reply once again. Without wishing to labour the point, but your contractors though have identified the leak to be at the meter which is on the public footpath - not on private property. I am unclear as to why the waiver is relevant in such circumstances ?

    Hi BobbyBingo,

    Thanks for your response.

As part of the repair, we will excavate the area between the meter box and your property and depending on the exact location of the leak and condition of the supply pipe, we may need to carry out works on your private property. All details will be discussed during the repair. The leak repair waiver details the terms and conditions should we be required to carry out works on your private property.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Amy
