They'd want them burned at the stake!

I like Let's Run, it's a brilliant running resource, but as an American site their hopeless bias towards Americans makes it a little difficult to take seriously at times.

I was watching CNN last night and the story was very pro-Richardson.
Without over-stating the fact, there are some Americans who think that their law/rules trumps (no pun intended) international law/rules.

They, as a country, have been pretty embarrassing over this. I’ve seen loads argue that as it was legal she did nothing wrong. As if the likes of nandrolone aren’t legitimate drugs with legitimate uses. Christ my mam had to use it at one stage

I think the one month suspension is about right

I mentioned her earlier in this thread, but Femke Bol has now inserted herself firmly into the conversation for an Olympic medal and not just the bronze either. She ran 52:37 in Stockholm, this afternoon, destroying her PB and running the second fastest time in the world this year. Any slip up from McLaughlin or Muhammad and she’ll be there to pounce.

With Warholm’s WR during the week, McLaughlin’s WR in the US trials and deep fields across both the men’s and women’s events, the 400m hurdles are shaping up to be the races of the Olympics.

I knew Bol was a prospect but I didn't think she was this good. 6th fastest of all time after tonight! As Hamachi mentioned above, very much in the medal mix for Tokyo now.

Very fast women's 800m tonight also, won by Almanza in 1:56.28. 19 year old Keely Hodgkinson got a big PB too, now a 1:57.51 runner.

Beatrice Chepkoech not in any kind of form in the steeplechase, finishing 3rd in a very average (for her) 9:10. Decent race for Krause to take second in 9:09.

Timothy Cheruiyot looked a bit laboured at times, but eventually pulled away easily for a 3:32 win in the men's 1500. All going well he'll be facing off against Jakob in Monaco on Friday, I suspect there'll be a couple of changes to the Kenyan team after that.

Monaco should be insane on Friday. We're finally in Olympic month!

Sifan Hassan has entered in all three of the 1500, 5k and 10k for Tokyo. Now I imagine she's not actually planning on running all three, merely keeping all her options open. It's gonna be very interesting to see what she chooses, she had decided on the 5k/10k double, but if she gets another convincing win over Kipyegon on Friday I reckon she'll choose the 1500.

Her hurdling improvement last night was massive. If anything they are too small for her. I still can’t see her challenging Maclaughlin and Muhammad unless they make big mistakes as I think both will lower the WR again.
Also Bol has a lot of races in her legs already indoor and outdoor, I worry the wheels will come off at some stage if she’s not careful.

Yeah, Chepkoech looked like a shadow of her 2019 self. Krause is a dark horse. She’s not the fastest flat runner but has great hurdling technique and seems to be able to peak at just the right time. I wouldn’t be surprised if she snuck a bronze in Tokyo.

Speaking of German distance runners, where is Konstanze Klosterhalfen? She hasn’t raced for months. I’m a fan and hope that she isn’t injured. She didn’t race the German championships, so I fear the worst..

Chepkoech hasn't raced a lot this year but she did set the 5k WR on the roads back in February, so I wouldn't rule her out just yet. I think Monaco will tell us a lot, I personally wouldn't be surprised if she was saving herself for that and is intent on making a statement run there.

Don't know exactly what the story is with Klosterhalfen, but she does post quite a few stories of herself training on Instagram, so at least appears not to be injured. It is strange she's raced so little, has the German team been named for Tokyo? Given she's only raced once, and that was her 31:01 10k back in February, I assume that's what she's aiming for if healthy.

Rhasidat named in Euro u20, does this mean she won't be picked for Tokyo?

The Olympic Federation has indicated that athletes had to be registered by 4th July. So presumably those selected already know if theyre going. And those who didnt make it already know.

I wonder has there been an appeal or two hence why it hasn’t been announced? That is of one can appeal being excluded from a relay team/squad.

To be honest the latest Olympic news release makes no sense.
They state that Team Ireland consists of 79 officially selected athletes. By my reckoning there is 78 (but a Dressage rider was indicated and no official announcement). They dont seem to be counting Travelling Reserves.
    For the record Cycling 7, Equestrian 7 (inc Dressage), Boxing 7, Diving 2, TKD 1, Triathlon 2. Gymnastics 2, Canoeing 1, Rowing 13, Sailing 3, Mod Pentathon 1, Badminton 1, Golf 4, Hockey 16, Rugby 12.
This "78 or 79" does not seem to include 7 Athletics already announced.
They say the closing date for registering athletes is 4pm Monday July 5th.
They say that there are over 110 spots confirmed and official announcements still to come for five sports which I think are
Swimming (six individuals and at least one relay team qualified)
    Judo (2 qualified)
    Shooting (one invitational place)
    Dressage maybe 1.
And Athletics.....maybe 26 (7 Road athletes already announced) 4 Entry standards (Mageean Finn, Barr, English) 4 Men rankings (2x200, 1x1500, 1 Walk) 7 Female Rankings (P Healy, Lavin, Flanagan SHealy, 3x800) and the relay maybe just four as Healy and Barr are already o plane)
    But all of this 78 or 79 plus (26, 10, 1, 2,1) is 117 ish and higher than 110.
So as OFIs maths is a bit questionable maybe the date 5th July is not right.
But if the relay athletes are already nominated, selected and even registered, then appeals are too late (presumably).
I would have expected appeal/s or whatever.
More so I would have expected "leaks"

5th July was the deadline for federations to register names with IOC. The OFI held off naming athletes and swimmers because if some other countries decline their quotas, they can be redistributed. That’s why they haven’t given an official final tally yet.

They’ve named athletes in sports where they know that won’t happen (ie they know where Ireland won’t gain anything)

They’re also announcing teams one or two a day for maximum exposure

Yes, I saw the "maximum exposure" as kinda build up and one team per day gives a kinda equal billing to "big" and "small sports".
But thanx for pointing out the "quota" thing...
apparently 81 was the highest total ever sent. We are way past that now. (of course team sports help but a good trend to see)

78 to Atlanta is officially our biggest team.

Even without the hockey and rugby teams we’d be at our highest ever

The most sports we’ve entered at a games has been 14 and we’re in 19 for Tokyo

Rhasidat Adeleke through to the women's 100m final in the European Juniors very comfortably. Israel Olatunde finished 3rd in his semi, 10th overall.

Adeleke's final is at 15:20 tomorrow.

Mid-Ulster have a gem in Nick Griggs, born in December 2004 and into the final of the u20 3000M. Had not heard of him until his win at nationals a few weeks ago, dealing with a close bereavement aswell recently makes his rise all the more remarkable.

We have had many distance talents in Irish athletics over the last few years but from his performance today he looks like the real deal. Expect him to be in with a shout of a medal aswell this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

Griggs looked good, so to mcphillips.

will be suprised if Rhasidat doesn't win and set a pb, she has cruised through, only the dutch girl has gone below 11.40 and that was a pb slower than hers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,193 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Gold for Adeleke. 11.34. Clear win. 200m heats in 2 hours time.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

She just jogged to a 23.20 in her heat. Nobody else in this field has run anywhere near that in their lives and she has just done so at a canter.

    Incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,193 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Robert McDonnell very impressive, I must say, winning his 200m heat from lane 2. 21.16 and a very clear margin of victory.

Adeleke was ridiculous in the 200 heat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

    Rhashidat cruises through,

McDonnell just about gets in too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,193 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Gold and a national record in nearly still conditions for Adeleke. 22.90!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,271 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

She's a ferocious talent. Goodness knows what she'll be like in two or three years time if she keeps on improving like this.

How on earth did she not make the Olympic team btw? She's arguably the No.1 athlete in the country at the moment and ahead of Thomas Barr and Ciara Mageean in terms of talent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

the 4*400 squeaked into the final tommorrow, be interestung what happens if they let her run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

    O'conner up to 5th in the decathlon, 4 pbs from 5 events . <50points from 3rd.

    So unlucky for her

What an incredible day. Leading the medal table after three days is a great achievement for our little island.

Two outstanding performances from Griggs and McPhillips in what were stacked fields.

Adeleke was always going to win gold barring disaster. She was the clear standout in that race. Nobody got close to her.

  • Registered Users Posts: 157 ✭✭gavinoontheweb

Full videos of all the finals are up now at this link:

Unreal wins from the middle distance lads, such brave and commanding performances great to see from green vests.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,220 ✭✭✭waynescales1

The 2 UK athletes and the Dutchman in McPhillips race appeared to run fairly slow races compared to what they are capable of.

Griggs ran 8:17, wonder what happened yer man Botolin, his SB is 8:04.

Adeleke is gonna get an Olympic medal in Paris.

Championship races are completely different ball games to races that are paced. The fact McPhillips was able to run so close to his PB suggests he'd be much quicker if the race had a pacemaker.

Adeleke is a huge talent but I certainly would not be stating she will win a medal in a Paris. It’s 3 years away, she will still only be 21/22. She would be doing fantastic to make semi finals and possibly sneak a final spot in whichever event she fully specialises in, assuming she keeps improving.

As seen with many many young talents before, a lot can change in a few years. Look at Gina Apke Moses, European junior 100m champion 2017. Injuries and change of training location etc and she is nowhere near what would have been expected. Look at Desiree Henry in the UK, a shadow of her former self due to injuries. A lot can happen so the most important thing is that she receives the support from everywhere to help her through any potential issues that will arise over the coming years. Ditto for Cian McPhilips, Nick Greggs and some of the other obvious big talents that are competing at euro juniors and u23s but didn’t medal this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 745 ✭✭✭Forge83

Does that rank her ahead of Phil Healy over 400m?

Shows how brutal the sport can be. Knowing that performance is in you but not being able to get it out until it’s too late. On the positive side it gives her a great starting point for 2022. Surely we will now have a women’s 4x4 team qualifying for majors again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,585 ✭✭✭ahnowbrowncow

Why was Cian not running in the 800m?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,193 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

    Better chance in the 15.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

1500 is his event, was only doing the 800m indoors to improve his speed. it worked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,271 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I'd agree completely that it's very early days yet with Rhasidat and any number of things could knock her development. We even see this with footballers - they can look like a young Messi or Ronaldo at age 18 and by 23 / 24 they're playing in the lower leagues.

But having said that, her potential is clearly huge. She's probably the most exciting Irish athlete to emerge since a young Sonia O'Sullivan in the late 80s, early 90s.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Great news about Adeleke. To be honest though I don't follow the sprints that much, how favourably would her times now compare with athletes who've pushed on to reach World/Olympic finals etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,271 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

She's probably not at the level yet to medal in, say, a European Championships but she's quickly heading in that direction. She could possibly reach a Euro 200m final on current form, so that gives you an indication of her potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭YFlyer

    Any Irish athletes competing today?
