Adeleke is a huge talent but I certainly would not be stating she will win a medal in a Paris. It’s 3 years away, she will still only be 21/22. She would be doing fantastic to make semi finals and possibly sneak a final spot in whichever event she fully specialises in, assuming she keeps improving.

As seen with many many young talents before, a lot can change in a few years. Look at Gina Apke Moses, European junior 100m champion 2017. Injuries and change of training location etc and she is nowhere near what would have been expected. Look at Desiree Henry in the UK, a shadow of her former self due to injuries. A lot can happen so the most important thing is that she receives the support from everywhere to help her through any potential issues that will arise over the coming years. Ditto for Cian McPhilips, Nick Greggs and some of the other obvious big talents that are competing at euro juniors and u23s but didn’t medal this time.

Does that rank her ahead of Phil Healy over 400m?

Shows how brutal the sport can be. Knowing that performance is in you but not being able to get it out until it’s too late. On the positive side it gives her a great starting point for 2022. Surely we will now have a women’s 4x4 team qualifying for majors again.

Why was Cian not running in the 800m?

    Better chance in the 15.

1500 is his event, was only doing the 800m indoors to improve his speed. it worked.

I'd agree completely that it's very early days yet with Rhasidat and any number of things could knock her development. We even see this with footballers - they can look like a young Messi or Ronaldo at age 18 and by 23 / 24 they're playing in the lower leagues.

But having said that, her potential is clearly huge. She's probably the most exciting Irish athlete to emerge since a young Sonia O'Sullivan in the late 80s, early 90s.

Great news about Adeleke. To be honest though I don't follow the sprints that much, how favourably would her times now compare with athletes who've pushed on to reach World/Olympic finals etc?

She's probably not at the level yet to medal in, say, a European Championships but she's quickly heading in that direction. She could possibly reach a Euro 200m final on current form, so that gives you an indication of her potential.

O'Connor has recorded 8 PBs out of the 9 events so far. Looks on for a huge PB and a top 5 finish.

some effort from Doc in the 1500, missed out on bronze by just over 100.

Was that the Senior Irish Record he broke?

  • Registered Users Posts: 321 ✭✭horsebox1977

No, they are using junior implements.

Does anyone know if Barry Walsh used junior or senior implements for his junior record?

Adeleke had too much ground to make up.

Incredible run from Adeleke in the last leg of the 4 x 400m.....started out her lap from way back and very nearly medalled but just ran out of steam in the last 30m.

Adeleke's leg was the fastest in the whole race, 52.54.

Imagine what she could have done today if she hadn't got those six earlier races under her belt. It was exhilarating watching her going down the back straight and passing the other runners as if they were standing still.

  • Registered Users Posts: 321 ✭✭horsebox1977

I actually thought that is she hung on for that 3rd place she would have got it - but she went for it (gold) and it just took too much out of her. Great run all the same.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,836 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

If anything, she went off too fast on her first 200 and then ran out of steam towards the finish. But it was fantastic to watch anyway.

Interesting stat from Jon Mulkeen on Twitter:

Adeleke covered the first 300m of her leg in 36.37.

For context, the world U20 best for 300m is 36.25, the European U20 best is 36.46 and the senior Irish record is 37.07.

Agree 100%. Look at British sprint star, broke world record for 200m in 2019 and since covid suffered illness and injury and out at the moment. These athletes need to be looked after and nutured and not get caught up in the hype surrounding star athletes at 18/ 19. Imo another poor decision by Athletics Ireland allowing Rhasidad run in that relay final today. She ran herself into the ground playing catch up trying to win a medal. It looked like she might be injured at one stage when the lactic. Went through 200m split in 23.3 apparently crazy stuff. Id say the coach back in Texas will not be happy looking at this. Had her job done 6 races in couple days 2 titles an Irish record and they still wanted more putting her out for the seventh time after a long first season in the states indoors and outdoors. Pure greed in search of medals , they could have run her first leg and let the rest of the team pull out that bit extra in the fight for medal. The next couple of years will be important in her development and hopefully the people in Texas look after her because Athletics Ireland wont.

You could tell : she was trailing that leading group by a big distance starting out on the last lap but had almost caught the two leaders by the home turn. That was blistering stuff.

Not fantastic to watch if your her coach over in Texas. Had her business done winning 2 titles and an Irish record and 6 races in couple days . Crazy decision by Athletics Ireland allowing her run for the seventh time pure greed in search of a medal. Ran herself to a standstill and staggered up the home straight. Races like that can empty an athlete and no need of it. Time will tell.
